It's been three years since I first applied to med school.

It's been two since I first held a letter of rejection in my hand.

It's been 8 months since a summer of grueling anticipation came to an unfruitful end.

It's been 6 hours since I found out I was accepted.

Well, this post has been a long time in the making. I've been accepted to Dalhousie for the class of 2014. I'm a New Brunswick applicant. This is my third time applying, as I was rejected post-interview for the class of 2012, I was waitlisted for the class of 2013 (made it to position 2 by the end of the summer), and now at long last I've been accepted to the class of 2014. Talk about running the gamut, haha.

First off, the required information:

MCAT - 10-10-11-S

GPA: 3.6ish best 2 years OMSAS

Interview experience: I feel like I connected well with my interviewers. When I mentioned some of my ECs and described my workload of 20 credit hours of engineering every semester, as well as working 20-40 hours per week, as well as training for swimming 10 hours each week, their eyes lit up (particularly when I mentioned 'army medic'). I had a great interview experience.

ECs: I have a lot of these. I'm currently an army medic. From May 2009 until Oct 2009 I worked 40 hours/wk as an autism specialist. From May 2007 until Oct 2008 I volunteered in my city's pediatrics ward. I have 3 years of varsity swimming under my belt, and I've represented my province at Canada Games. From Sept 2006 until May 2007 I coached the Special Olympics swim team... the list goes on quite a bit further. I'm glad I've had to opportunity to do these things, and I hope to continue to be active in my community now that I am finally 'in'.

So, why has it taken 3 years? You can scroll back to my previous years' posts to see, but the Coles notes are that during my first attempt, I was ridiculously under-prepared. I'm not sure what happened during my second attempt, but it must not have been awful, since I still made it high on the waitlist (what a rotten summer of waiting that was, haha).

Thanks to all of you who have supported me along the way. Congratulations to those who have been accepted. For future applicants, I'll only say that if this is something you truly want, there is a seat waiting for you (provided you're willing to make the required sacrifices to distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack). Thank you everyone!

Guest ben1000

I'm a NB resident finishing an bachelor's degree with honours in Biology. My GPA was 3.56 (OMSA 3.49 I think) and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: 9

Verbal: 10

Biological Sciences: 9

Written Sample: m ( English as second language)

EC: President of the Friends of MSF association in Moncton, Volunteered in geriatrics ward at hospital, worked in a special needs home, University hockey team, TA for 2 years, biology tutor, 1 year research in animal behavior.

I was wait listed #2 by Dalhousie. This is my first time applying to this school.

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend Dalhousie as my first choice.

Got the letter today: NB Waitlist #20.

MCAT PS 11, VR 9, BS 12, M (english as a second language also)

GPA 3.7

Finishing a PhD in biology, got publications, a few months worth of hospital volunteering.

I felt like the interview went OK, except for the simulation, where I failed to address the underlying issue in my opinion.

I'm not holding my breath... Good luck to all of you.

JUST received my letter today...."big ups" canada post.

Third time applying, in province.

Accepted!

MCAT 29P

CGPA- 3.75... graduated in '06 so not sure if they used best 2 or best 3

BScH in psychology... currently doing some grad work in Epidemiology.

Interview: 3rd MMI... thought it went well! Though as a disclaimer, I've never really felt bad about any of the ones in previous years.

I've read so many "third time's a charm" posts, and would be a mix of frustrated (there really can't be anything THAT fundamentally different about the person from year to year) and optimistic that I'd eventually be one of them. My advice (and I gave this even before I finally got in) is if you really want it, keep trying. In all of my post-rejection meetings/phone calls with Dal I was told there was nothing "wrong" with my application and to re-apply......it appears persistance does eventually pay off.

Especially to anyone that was rejected for a second time, I think there is also a lot of luck/chance involved. I had only interviewed at Dal (NS resident) for the last two years... this year I was offered interviews at MAC and UofT as well.

Still debating where I'll end up... and even if I'll attend my UofT interview. I really always imagined if I was lucky enough to get into a Canadian med school I'd be at dal... but I really fell in love with MAC when I was there, so we'll see how it plays out on May 13th.. but I may be looking at you NS waitlisters! :)

I was accepted!! This is my third time applying. The first two times I applied, I was waitlisted. I've written the MCAT twice. My previous MCAT score (used in both previous applications) was 26O (8/9/O/9).

Accepted this afternoon!! Though I can hardly believe it.

I'm a Nova Scotia resident. I have a B.Sc., combined honours in Microbiology&Immunology and English.

GPA: 3.75/4.0

MCAT: 30S (12-verbal, 10-bio, 8-physics)

EC's: Ran the Dalhousie chapter of a national charity for three years, tutoring in adult literacy, assisted teaching science to kids. Play several instruments, speak three languages.

I was told my interview went very well, and that it was definitely my lack of medically-related ECs that placed me so low, so for future applicants, my advice would be to make sure you do hospital volunteering from early on.

This was my first time applying to medical school. I applied to MUN and Dal, and only got an interview at Dal.

Clearly, I will be attending Dal... starting in a week.... omg panic.

I'm in province (NS) in biology with a GPA ~3.6 and MCAT 27O. I've been ACCEPTED(!!) at Dalhousie and this is the only place I applied. This is my first time applying. I have tons of ECs including volunteering at two medical clinics, animal shelter, overseas volunteering, lots of society and student union involvement, worked all through school including laboratory research experience...

Thanks to everyone on PM101 for helping with my anxieties while applying. I found this board to be a great source of info and support. Hope to see many of you in the class of 2015!
