fingers_crossed
Hi DubZteR, I am a 1st year med student, and I'm in a similar situation as to where you were 3 years ago - thinking about the various specialties out there. I am really interested in asking you more about Rad Onc. Do you know if you can PM me your email address or some way of getting in contact with you? Thanks! LovingLife
Another year has gone by, and unfortunately from what senior radonc have mentioned the job situation may not be any better. Some have even taken a year off for additional degrees or a research fellowship. Scary indeed to be seemingly 'forced' into such a situation if that is what is happening. However, I agree with Dubtzer on both counts that specialists across the board are having trouble finding jobs in Canada, and that you have to do what you love... Still, when respected RadOncs are calling for evidence-based reductions in spots and resistance to transfers (link), it's hard for those passionate about the field like myself not to be scared. I'm also curious about the increasing number of IMGs filling the available RadOnc spots according to the last CaRMS stats. How will they be able to meet their Return of Service contracts? I was actually talking to a toronto rad onc today about this sort of thing - the only way in Ontario it seems there were to be ANY new jobs in rad onc this coming year was because collectively all the current rad oncs agreed to a small pay cut. Cannot see that situation continuing indefinitely!
DubZteR
This is why a specialist oversupply is a dangerous thing. If you take a look at supply and demand for rad onc in Canada and the US, demand is actually greater than supply so we definitely don't have an "oversupply" in the field. The issue is funding which is felt across all specialties.
mavrik13
Hard to say... while the demand will certainly increase (hard to argue with that), the issue is whether the government will continue to invest in expanding treatment facilities and hiring more Rad Onc's. Still very interested in the field, but the job market is always a concern. I've been checking in on the CARO website to see what sort of jobs are being posted, and it seems that the majority of the openings are for Department Heads - or positions in 'smaller' cities (right now - Saint John and Sydney NS)
Wachaa
Is it possible to have a job in rad onc in canada without needing to participate in research, or just minimal research?
rmorelan
Yup, then you're just doing more clinical/service work. Entirely possible; it's just something you have to negotiate with the hospital. Most likely this would not be at an academic centre, however. Aren't almost all the jobs though at an academic centre?
