College-Girl
I'm currently enrolled in a Toronto College for PSW course. I eventually want to go into nursing and was wondering if this diploma will help me in the future. Has anyone taken this route before and if so, did it help when applying to the larger colleges? kapers
I didn't do this route, but I'll put in my opinion anyways. (I'm a first year nursing student at uni doing my BScN, did nursing straight out of high school). I suppose it depends on the courses in your PSW. I think the concepts covered in PSW might help you in a general way in year one nursing, again depending on the courses in your BScN program. Prior experience with "real patients" might make clinicals and OSCEs less intimidating at first. If nothing else, you can continue to work as a PSW while in nursing school, that's always good for the resume. Shows that you got started in the health care field early, maybe. However, I don't think they even look at anything other than high school grades when applying to nursing, esp if you apply to Canadian universities. This may change in the future though.
