Full Year English absolutely required for U.S.???

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just wanted to know if for applying to U.S. a full year in English is really required or not. I'm entering my last year and don't have room to take a full year english, so are there any ways around this when applying to U.S. dental schools? (i.e. can you just send them a letter or take some kind of entrance English test instead) Additionally, if you haven't met the pre-requisites for something at a university (i.e. English) but say, you can take an English course during the summer before the year starts, is that a possible notion? Or will universities just say "talk to us again when you have the credit completed." This whole area is a bit shady for me...thanks for any help!

It really varies from school to school. You can get away by doing 2 half year courses. The other thing is, as long as you completed your requirements before starting, its fine. I would be surprised if you haven't already completed at least 1 term worth of English already. But the best thing to do would be to ask the school directly regarding completion in the summer before school starts. I know thats what one of my roommates is doing this summer before starting school at Case

There are a few things you can. Like Benrey said, it depends on the school. I know Tufts requires half year English as a prereq.

If you did OAC English, that will count. I am assuming you didn;t because you are in your final year. Another option is to take English online, through Western during the year, or through Athabasca university when ever you want at your own pace (670$ for the course).

I applied to US schools without all the prereqs and I got interviews np. The key to getting into US schools is applying early. Apply as soon as it opens, I think June or something.

Bear in mind the price of US schools. Really expensive.

I know quite a bit about the process, so if you have any questions let me know.

Good luck.

Hey Carlitto,

About applying to U.S. schools, you can apply without having fulfilled the prereq's as long as they will be fulfilled before the denitstry term starts? Am I right here?

Also, do you have an idea of how much emphasis they put on reference letters and gpa? Say you have a pretty good gpa but your reference letters are just ok, would this be a big factor against you in the selection process??

Thanks in advance!

English courses are important, so make sure you have what they want. As long as you get everything done before matriculation, you'll be fine. Some schools are literally anal about their English pre reqs (Columbia, for example). Some will let you substitute English with any other writing intensive course (Anthro, Sociology, Philosophy etc).

WWEISSHA,

Yes you can apply without have the prereqs complete, as long as you show them on your application that you plan to take them. There is a section on the application where you can put your planned courses i.e. courses you plan to take. Some schools have a deadline for you to finish them by, but most of the schools just want them done before May.

A piece of advice from me, finish them ASAP so that your application is more complete.

Reference letters usually are not as big of a deal as GPA. Just fulfill the reference letter requirements and you will be fine (again depends on the school but generally speaking its not a big deal). GPA is important. US schools put more emphasis on the DAT, so do well on that.

Also for GPA, your US GPA will be higher than your Canadian GPA. What school do you go to? If its Western, you will be very happy with

your US GPA. I dont know much about other schools.

Hope that helps,
