Is it ok to re-take prereqs after you apply?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am planning to apply for fall 2010 and i would be filling my apps at the start of next summer. In that summer i am also planning to re-take my prereqs and i wont the marks until the third week of aug. So is this ok and would this affect my application or should i try to take it before i start applying cuz as far as i know when the apps are sent out...you have to send ur mcat, gpa and personal statments. Also i am also planning to take my sec try at mcat in next aug so would that affect my app too? any help would be great.

hmm well for most canadian schools, apps are due in sept/oct so ur summer courses would be included...not too sure about RE-taking pre-reqs tho...some schools at least discourage u from re-taking them unless u failed them or smth...so look into that. as for the mcat, ya u can write it in august of your application year.

You can't re-take pre-reqs to boost your marks... they won't look at the marks if it's the second time you took the course. Also, any course you take in the summer will not be taken into account for GPA... you need to take courses together with a full course-load during the fall and winter semesters. As for MCAT, I don't believe it makes a difference how many times you write it.

depends on the school tho...eg. ubc, mac, and queens (for ur cgpa) take all courses into account.

For Queen's I take the cGPA as for the last 2 years if one doesn't meet the cutoff for overall GPA? Is that correct?

And for repeating courses, I e-mailed schools throughout the country and was strongly deterred to re-take courses (but even if I wanted to repeat I can't as long as I passed). On this note, suppose a genetics course at UfT call it (BIO 3YY3) is taken, and another genetics course with somewhat overlapping material is taken at UBC (call it Bio 3ZZ3). Technically the courses are not same and should not be classified as a repeat. Would the overlap in materials be enough to classify it a repeat?

Thanks

ya queens also looks at last-2-yr gpa (which doesn't include summer courses) if u don't meet the overall gpa (which does include summer courses) cutoff

hmmm...is this to satisfy pre-req requirements? cuz if not, they wouldn't really know or check to see if they overlap or not...but for pre-req courses, they do have a list of which courses from other universities satisfy ubc's pre-req requirements...and if u take 2 courses which both satisfy the same pre-req requirement, then it would be considered a repeat..in which case ubc would only count the first course u took to satisfy the pre-req.

Hey avenir, thanks for the response. No, it's not to fulfill the pre-req requirements. I already have them. But I am thinking of doing a couple years of undergrad (of a 2nd degree) and was curious just how my new courses will be evaluated. I am interested in Biology but already have BSc in Biochem, so inevitably there will be some overlap.
