Fraises
Just out of curiosity...if you got into U of T, is there any reason why you should want to choose UWO instead?
Peaches
The only thing I can think of is it'd be much cheaper to live there in term of rent ect. but I'm sure the education is the same...
kp4what
theres significant difference in the amount of time spent on clinics. uwo has much more emphasis on clinics in their curriculums, which makes you much more 'skilled' once you graduate. in many ways, tuition + living cost + clinics + etc, i prefer uwo over uoft
Peaches
theres significant difference in the amount of time spent on clinics. I really don't see where you got this information on significant time difference.
keith24
i also asked my friends (who are already in dental school) this question. UWO has more clinic time is what i heare as well. Also, I heard from a student at UoT that you are forced to learn stuff that is not really necessary jsut because researchers there need to teach a course. I'm not really sure if that is a good thing or not, because u get more education, but according to my friend, its a waste of time. Does anyone know the tuition differences between teh two schools? AllSmiles
I've also heard that UT is more theoretical based (thus the researchers teaching courses) while UWO is focused more on the hands on skills.
Peaches
I think you should just go to check out both school and just pick whichever you like better, I personally really liked the feel of UofT I mean even if western gives me 10 hours of practice time, who cares, we will all have learned the skills we need before they let us graduate, and after that all you will do all day is clinical so I don't think its anything to worry about. AllSmiles
is anyone here familiar with the tuition of both schools? UT ($ 28,117.22): http://www.utoronto.ca/dentistry/admissions/undergraduatesummary.html UWO (33,761$, includes only school fees, not living or bank interest): http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/dentistry/docs/Expense%20Page%20-%20National%2007-08_1.htm Of course these are approximations, things change every year, and who knows if all the expenses are listed for each school. There's not a real significant difference between the two. (especially when you consider living expense differences, and I believe that the living expense estimates on the london site are a bit high, I spend much less than that)

Aida
not sure where that came from... Yeah, I thought tuition in UWO is more. I am not talking about living expenses just the tuition. I was looking at previous years expenses in each schools' website and it seems that way. I may be totally wrong.
superstar
i talked to a friend in her Yr2 UWO Dentistry, he says that the tuition on the website seems to be wrong and he pays much less than that. they overestimate it lots. not including living he pays about 20-25k and it goes lower over yr3 and 4. Talking to both UT and UWO dent students, they say UT costs a bit more.
koft
Hmm okay.. Both have similar tuition. Skills will learn over time, however, most UWO grads are more comfortable than UT in the first year or 2... but then everything will eventually level out! It will be a never ending debate which school is better.. Ultimately at the end, does your patient really cares where you graduated from??? as long as you are licensed to practice in Canada! As far as I know, most of my patient never asked where I graduated from. However, they do ask how many of these procedures have you done! ________ Marijuana Vaporizers
Adversary
Best thing to do is visit each school and talk to the students. Always ask what is bad about their schools because it's harder to lie or rather avoid the info when confronted directly. Complaints usually give you info you aren't aware of. Of course, it's best to ask more than one student to get a general sense.
breezy
Hey guys Although I am biased as a 1st year U of T student, just remember to check your info. I was told by our registrar (although that may be biased as well) that it is only a rumor that UWO has more clinic time. U of T seems to really want to emphasize clinic time, and from what I have heard, the 2012 class will get even more time in the clinics in first year than we did (and we've had quite a bit) Remember not to make your decision on schools based on rumors. Call U of T and UWO and ask your questions directly.
