Embarrassing interview stories

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just interviewed with Toronto this weekend and did something really embarrassing... :o

My foot fell asleep during my interview (which I thought went well) and after I got up and shook my interviewers' hands, I had no motor control of my left foot and took a dive when I tried to pick up my handbag...

I can't believe I FELL!!! I just laughed it off as the interviewers were asking if I was ok, but I've been kicking myself since.

Although I know this unfortunate incident won't have any bearing on my performance, I thought it might be a good idea to start a support thread for those of us who might have done something a little stupid... ;)

Wanna hear MY story? lol

When I had my interview @ McGill (the school I'm going to right now), I fell off from my chair and my suit-pants got ripped. I was embarrassed like hell, but tried to act cool. My sky-blue underwear was exposed through the fissure, and I swear I saw one of the interviewers holding herself back from laughing. (They were nice enough to ask if I was ok though)

Yep, thats my unforgettable memory. At least I have made a STRONG enough impression to get myself into my #1 school lol

During my U of C interview, one of the MMI ladies asked me a question and used a word I didn't know the definition to (I don't remember what now). I was honest and said I didn't know what it meant, but she said she couldn't tell me. I made up a meaning for it based on what it sounded like and based my answer on that. She laughed and hopefully she won't fail me for being an idiot, haha.

It's good to know you still got in! Congrats! The student giving us a tour after my interview gave me two other embarrassing stories where the interviewees got in as well, so I guess it's not so horrible! ;)

As for asking the interviewers to define a word, I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like you did a good job of recovering. I know of one person who asked their interviewers to define the word empathy because they didn't know what it meant and got in... It's all about recovery!

I knwo someone who broked down and cried at the U of T interview..... told her to take couple minutes so she left then came back re-composed herself...

and got admission when the time came.

I know someone who also walked into the beam of the door on their way out and got in...

so even though you need support, try not to worry about it too much, they probably thought you just slipped and aren't going to hold it against you (esp if interview went well)

cheers

It was embarrassing, but I can laugh about it now. I had a few interviews this year, and have never fallen at a graduation ceremony or something, so it really was just a matter of time until something like this happened!

I love these stories... :D

I was deathly sick at one of my interviews last year (read: super congested, dizzy, and scratchy throat). While responding to one of the questions, I had to stop every couple sentences to cough, but at one point I felt a really bad cough come on, and when I coughed all of this mucus spurted out of my nose. I cupped my hand over my nose and looked around the room for a paper towel or something, until I noticed that my interviewer had her hand stretched out with a kleenex in it.

I got into that school, so don't worry about it all. I still laugh about this every once in a while, but was absolutely horrified at the time.

For my interview suit I picked out a really nice skirt and jacket that I loved. The only problem was that the jacket was extremely low-cut- you could see the top of my bra sticking out (I won't say "cleavage" since I don't have much, lol). So my mom put a hook and eye on it so it would not show anything.

...When I came out of my Queen's interview, I looked down and noticed that the hook and eye had come undone.... Most likely this either happened at the end of the interview when I bent over to grab my purse ...or at the beginning, when I bent over to sign the confidentiality form. I'm hoping it was the former! Otherwise, I was flashing my bra to the interviewers the entire time (as opposed to the last couple minutes)!

For Western I re-enforced the stupid hook and eye with several safety pins.

If anyone has time to kill, I highly recommend looking up a thread at SDN called "most bizzare interview moment". Its thousands of posts long, but has many hilarious stories.

On the morning of my interview I felt very nauseous, but I thought that it was just interview day nerves. As I walked down the stairs to go to my interview I vomited and then passed out into my vomit (hitting my head on our ceramic tile floor).

When I awoke, I was determined to make it to my interview, vomit stained suit and all! Luckily, my mom called the university and told them that I was too sick to attend my interview and they rescheduled. Thank goodness, since the exact time that my interview was supposed to start I threw up 5 consecutive times. Could imagine what kind of entrance that would have been! HaHa!
