Anyone know about applying to Med School in middle of Grad School?

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

Well as I wait for May 15th like everyone else, I have to think about backup plans. I got admitted to a two year Master's program (research based) at University of Toronto (Medical Biophysics). I'm inclined to take it, but do I need to finish the Master's before I can apply to medicine again? i.e. could I apply to schools this summer for entry next fall (when I'd enter the second year of my Masters) and just leave the Master's unfinished?? (I get the impression U of T and other schools don't allow this).

Totally unrelated but does anyone know if you can still signup for MCAT spots this summer?

Thanks everyone - it's so hard deciding what to do if medicine doesn't pan out (and everyone wants their answers NOW!).

As far as i know, no canadian school will allow you to leave your master's program unfinished. But, you can certainly apply in the middle of your master's program providing that by admission time you would have successfully completed your master's program.

eg. if you apply this year for admission into class of 2009, you would have to complete your master degree by july 2009. It is very rare that you can defer your admission (as far as i know).

Dal will withdraw my acceptance if I don't finish. SIGH. I wouldn't be entirely unhappy to be able to take the summer off, rather than finishing up in the summer term. Heh.

Hi there,

I'm not sure if the policy's now changed, but UofC allowed me to enter medical school without yet having finished my MSc. (I ended up completing it the month that I graduated from medical school.) Although I was allowed to do this, I wouldn't recommend it. Trying to complete a graduate degree in conjunction with completing medical school can be pretty taxing at times and it's probably better to concentrate on one fully to complete it and then the other.

In short, check the policy of each school to which you're applying.

Cheers,

Kirsteen
