AP English??

Recommended Posts

I don't think AP will suffice. It doesn't give you university credits if I remember correctly, so you'll still have to take the course for your undergrad degree. At least I think that's the way it worked, I vaguely recall lots of complaining from people going into uni from my high school. It was ghetto, we didn't have IB.

. . . not that I even did AP anyway.

Nah, you should get credit for AP courses. There may be a limit on how many and also a requirement for grades (at my school, you didn't get credit if you had 3 on the AP, even though it was a passing grade), but almost every school gives you uni credit for AP.

University of Alberta gives advanced standing (i.e. you can take a senior level course - lucky!) but not transfer credit for AP English. Now if you attended another university that did give you transfer credit for AP English, and you don't have any other university English courses.. not sure what they would do about that. Best to check with them.

I was offered credit at UofC for all of the AP courses I took in high school, but I chose not to use the credit and instead did all of the first year courses - probably the best decision I ever made. It allowed me to make an easy transition into post-secondary, and I did a ton of stuff outside of school I wouldn't have been able to do if I went straight to advanced courses or something else brand new.

See, I loved having the AP credits because it allowed me to take a lighter courseload in my senior year, when I also happened to get sick, so I needed to lighten up my workload, anyway. So I was VERY happy to have those extra credits at the time, since it allowed me to drop down to 12 credits per semester and have a bit more breathing room.
