med2012
Hi guys do you think gpa's of 3.83 and 3.73 for best two years are good enough to get an interview at western, provided that the dat scores are okay? anyone with lower cumulative gpa's get an interview? Arnie
Apply. Lifted from UWO's web-page: Selected applicants will be required to attend for a personal interview in order to be considered for admission. Invitations for interview are based on the applicant achieving competitive undergraduate academic averages and DAT scores within the current applicant pool. [http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/dentistry/admissions_yr1.html] Funny thing about cut-offs that vary every year....Sometimes you get the croc and sometimes the croc gets you. Take a shot and hope your aim is true.
daryn
Seeing how it's so easy to apply, I don't see any harm in trying.
ad19
I think your actual percentage is more important then your GPA as reading other discussions. It seems this year's cutoff was 84.55%.
Contach
what's the difference between a GPA and an average? aren't they essentially the same thing? marks?
ad19
Ya they are both essentially marks but there are differences. For example at 3.7 is awarded to any mark between 81-84% so you could have a cGPA of 3.7 yet your average could be anywhere from 84 to 81. Hope that makes sense,
alcohulk
Yeah, I think that's unfair for some schools. Where I did my undergrad, the marking scale was set by each professor for each class. For example, I just finished a Human Physiology course in which an A was 91+ and I'm hovering at a 90. My Geology class (lol rocks for jocks) is 96+ for an A. Obviously if your school reports percentages and GPA, you are at an advantage. UWO scales GPA grades lower I believe; some people were saying its like 81 for an A- and 87 for an A/A+. Even if I had a 4.0 GPA, the maximum perentage I could receive would be an 87. Now someone who went to a school with percentage grades could easily have a 92 with a 4.0. Sadly, you will get screwed over if your school has GPAs only. I consistenly had over 85% throughout undergrad, and got rejected from UWO (20s all across DAT). Your best chances at UWO is probably if you're an Ontario resident attending a school with standardized marking scales. My brother got an interview way back in the year 2000 and got waitlisted, but he got into UT that year. He was doing his undergrad at UT, so that probably helped. So yeah, you just have to apply and hope you get an interview.
