muchdutch
Hey! I just went on a stagette and we went caving into Rat's Nest. It. Was. AWESOME!!!! I am totally hooked! It was my first time doing 'real' caving (before was just wandering among some rock-covered pathways). I remember you talking about the caving there. Can you actually go on your own (I mean not me, but you, considering you must be qualified)? I know they have the big gate there and it's locked so what do you do to get around this? Anyway, just thought I'd share my appreciation for that awesome place with you. That's all.
Dr.Cave
Glad you loved it:D Are you in Calgary? If so come on out to ASS pub night (Alberta Speleological Society) it's at the Hop in Brew Pub on 12th ave S by 2nd street W. Pub nights are the 1st 3rd and 5th Wednesdays of the month so there is one tonight - I'll be there at about 8:30. I can give you the low down on caving in the Rockies and you can meet some other cavers. Yes, ASS members can do unguided trips into Rat's Nest Cave which is 4 km long and 240 m deep. You probably saw about 5% of the cave on your tour. Do a google search on Alberta Speleological Society for more info about the club. You might try a trip on your own to Canyon Creek Ice Cave. It is really easy to find and I can tell you how to get there or send you a Google Earth link.
muchdutch
Unfortunately, I am in Edmonton. The closest caves that I know about are in Cadomin and that's still a few hours away - so sad... Yes, I do realize that we only did a very small portion of the cave on our tour. Our guide showed us a map and it was such a small amount that we went through compared to the entirety of the cave - amazing!! I will check out the club, but being in Edmonton I think my cave-access is quite limited. If I ever move down to Calgary however, I know who to call! Dr.Cave
There is an Edmonton Pub Night. I think it is only once a month though. Check out the ASS website to find out when and where. Driving to Edmonton Canmore isn't bad for a caving trip. Most of the Rockies exploration (i.e. new caves where noone has been before) is over an hour south of Fernie BC, that 4-5 hours of driving. Dr.Cave
Never, It's the best name ever. We had a T shirt that said tight squeeze and it had an donkey with a caving helmet on and there was a caver squeezing out of his but. I wish I had one of those T shirts, I'd wear it everywhere......
