U of T Meds 2012

wow...calm yourselves... I was just making the point that there are many non-premed101 classmates that would probably want to join as well...and they would most likely use a facebook search. And as previously mentioned, this group doesn't come up.

Looking forward to meeting you...probably

And while we are at it. We should do something about the Hippocratus figure, do any of you think (as I do) that it is a bit sexist to have only a male physician (with one bare nipple) as the icon of an entire medical class where the female students could potentially outnumber the male students?

(I looked at the 1T0 and 1T1 facebook groups and none of them had a person as their group portrait).

I must say that I fully understand and agree with the significance and rationale of putting Hippocratus there, it's just that I think we should also include the portrait of a famous female physician (like the first one that obtained an MD in North America but was forced to practice in Paris, France, can't remember what her name is though).

What's next? Wanting to take a female physician's oath? ;)

I can see why you'd want a female doctor represented as well, but the point of the Hippocrates figure was not to make a statement about the diversity of our class, but rather what we have in common -- namely, a passion for medicine. This is what Hippocrates is meant to represent.

Secondly, that particular statue is the one that is displayed in the Medical Sciences Building here at U of T. My intention was that he would also represent the University of Toronto, the place where we have all chosen to do our medical training. And incidentally, I take the nipple to be sort of a joke.

Wow! So honoured to have you, the admin, reply to my rantings. :D

Yeah, the reference to the nipple was a joke. That's the way ancient Greeks dress. Now that I know more about the significance of the statue and its relationship to U of T, I stand by your decision to have it as the group portrait. I'm sure that if other students or the female students in our class see the portrait as a sexist, then they will voice their concern in the future, by which time the picture could be changed to something else.

it made more sense when the graduating classes were the 90's (and earlier)... 9T9 or 'ninety nine' for example...so its a bit outdated, but classes have continued to be named in this manner...

ohhhhhhhhhhh

hahaha

i was confused
