Waiving Right for LOE - American Schools

Recommended Posts

i feel like i read somewhere that most students waive their right to view the LOE's (meaning they cannot view their LOE;s). Is there any reason behind that? Isn't it a better choice to be able to see the letters. why would anyone not want to view their letters?

Personally I would not want to waive my right (meaning I would be able to see the letters). But would this affect my selection/admission in any way??

It's for confidentiality, so that admissions can ensure that applicants don't mess around with the letters. That's why the prof is supposed to sign or stamp the back of the seal to ensure that it hasn't been tampered with. The schools want to know that you have confidence in the people you are choosing to write your reference letters. Why would you take the risk of asking someone to write a letter for you if you didn't trust them? I'd find someone who you trusted if you are worried about what he/she might write.

yeah i clearly see the point now. I mean, its not that I dont have the trust - otherwise I wouldn't have asked in the first place, but if you have the option to choose, I was just curious why people would simply waive their right. But thanks for the quick response. It makes sense now.
