Athabasca university.. first year bio and chem

DMD

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about retaking some of my prerequisite courses with Athabasca university (first year bio (bio 204/205) and chem (chem 217/218). Has anyone taken those courses with Athabasca university before? and how did you find them? I was also wondering if you are allowed to finish those courses in 2-3 months? thanks

I'm doing organic chem and physics through Athabasca right now. I think it's great. The expectations are all really clear, and the tutors are very helpful if you have any questions. The only thing that's difficult is keeping yourself motivated. I thought I'd finish in 2-3 months, too, and instead I ended up buying extensions. But if you can stick to a schedule I'd recommend it.

I'm just doing prereqs through Athabasca -- I already finished my degrees at UofC and UofA. I'm applying to UBC and UofC this fall, and everywhere on the prairies the next year if I don't get in.

One thing to keep in mind if you're planning on doing a BSc is Athabasca doesn't have a great selection of courses -- like biochem, which UBC requires.

Hi there, I did my biochem at Athabasca since I already had 6 courses at my school and was not allowed to take this too - I found it to be actually a little harder than what my classmates were doing, because ALL testing was done in writing - no multiple choice at all! That said, all the schools I contacted were ok with the Athabasca course - BUT I would suggest sending a quick email to each school and making sure (just for your own peace of mind). Hope this helps a bit, m

oh and I am editing to actually answer your question:) I don't think it looks bad - schools are very aware these days that people have lives and cannot take everything in the context of a full time/every day school experience, they also recognize the pressure people are under to get those pre-requisites and thus most schools are very cool about Athabasca (which by the way I think is a great school - certainly allows us "non-traditional" students to get where we need to be!).

Hi there, again, med schools vary on this - in my experience, the grade I received from Athabasca counted towards my pre-requisite GPA, rather than being treated as a summer course. Some schools (I think McMaster?) actually count the summer course GPA as well, so you may wish to look into that. I drove all the schools nuts with questions, but in the end it served me well as I did not have to go through any unforeseen issues, so my advice is - if you don't know something, go to the source and ask. They have the most up to date information, and goodness knows it changes every year these days! Good luck!! M
