lostintime
And did you get over it quickly? I know I'm not moving THAT far away...my friend's actually going abroad for a whole year, so I really shouldn't complain. But it's kinda scary at the same time.... Do you feel that getting involved in a lot of things and keeping yourself busy helps with it? Or spend more time talking on the phone to your family? Jamer
I was decently homesick when I went away in 1st year...it lasted the entire 1st semester but I was better by 2nd. I'm sure if I went abroad this year I'd be fine because I'd be used to being away from home. I found that keeping myself busy with activities and socializing was the best way to avoid it for sure. It's when you sit in your room and sulk that you feel the worst. There's nothing wrong with touching base with family but if you want to avoid being homesick your best bet is to avoid contact besides a couple times a week. Sheena815
I definitely was when I started 1st year, and it lasted for at least a few weeks, but it helped that I was only two hours from home and could visit without much difficulty if I wanted to. I was worried about this if I had to go to a new school for meds (which I don't, and for that I'm thankful). I know full well that I would have had a decent amount of depression and difficulty at the beginning, because I know myself. I don't like change, and am a family/ friend person and somewhat a homebody. I kept thinking "why did I even apply to queens?" -Just because of how far it was... and it wasn't even that bad, like 5 hours. Anyway, its a normal response, and it will pass. Keeping busy and making friends is a great way to help that along.
Tan008
I was homesick for a bit in first year (first term), but you get sucked into the campus life so quickly that it's really not that bad. Best of luck!

jelly31
I am pretty worried about getting homesick too, as I've never endured a harsh East Coast winter before and I'll be leaving my family and bf (basically common-law) behind.
