Recommended Posts

hello,

so i just got a job shadowing position at a dental office with two dentists and i start next week. i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect. im very excited but also nervous because im still not sure if i am expected to come with all the questions and expected to know exactly what experiences i want to get out of it..or if i am just following around the dentist. could anyone let me know about their experiences....

Well if you are applying to the states then it's pretty much a requirement, not so much in Canada (but it's good for interview answers). It is good to know what you are getting yourself into though  I would highly recommend it. Personally I've shadowed about 8 dentists over 3 years. It also helps you to build networks with dentists, you may be colleagues in the future...who knows :)

Really? You think the connections you would make now could lead to future employment? I feel this is very optimistic of you and applaud you for this.

At the same time, I wonder what actions you are taking to hone this relationship with the dentists you shadowed. I'm thinking about sending thank you cards in addition to adding the few that are on it, to Facebook... What about you?

Well I ended up working (not just shadowing) with many of the dentists, and I've used them as referees before for dental school and other jobs. So I have a pretty good connection with some of them (of course not all 8). After shadowing each one I also had the office manager write a little letter saying that I had done shadowing there. I also update them on my dental situation to keep them in the loop :) Actually just the other day I met a younger dentist who said that the first (and only) dentist he shadowed before dental school became the dentist he now works for. It can be very difficult sometimes to get your foot in the door for an associate, but if you know a couple dentists it will surely help you out. :)

This is true. Personally I was just talking tonight to the dentist that I had been shadowing this year and he was saying to keep in touch with him and he is already talking about having me work with him and buying his practice. I know that talk is just talk but you never know what will come of it. Connections in life are always helpful.
