kgmed23
Hi everyone, I'll be starting medicine this fall and was hoping to get some advice from med students on how to succeed and make yourself an attractive candidate for some competitive residencies. As of now, my goal is to go into surgery; however, I am sure it might change. Despite focusing on the school work during the year, what else should you be focusing on? What about in the summers? Thanks.

kgmed23
I looked into the Iserson's Getting into a Residency book and it has an american perspective. Would the same apply for residency in canada?
Lactic Folly
Yes, it has an American perspective, but the advice on finding your niche in medicine still holds.. hanging out on these boards and talking to people will help you learn how the match process differs for Canadians. blinknoodle
First of all, enjoy this summer.. no need to do anything right now. Afterwards, I suggest figuring out if you actually want to do surgery - shadows surgeons, etc. Explore other career possibilities to see what else might pique your interest. More specific suggestions can be found elsewhere on the board, including here: http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21394
