Starting medicine in fall...need advice for success

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'll be starting medicine this fall and was hoping to get some advice from med students on how to succeed and make yourself an attractive candidate for some competitive residencies. As of now, my goal is to go into surgery; however, I am sure it might change.

Despite focusing on the school work during the year, what else should you be focusing on? What about in the summers?

Thanks.

You get summers? Lucky!

First of all, enjoy this summer.. no need to do anything right now.

Afterwards, I suggest figuring out if you actually want to do surgery - shadows surgeons, etc. Explore other career possibilities to see what else might pique your interest.

More specific suggestions can be found elsewhere on the board, including here: http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21394
