Global Opportunities

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Can someone comment on the opportunities to do international work at UofC? I know that there are international electives but the handbook talks about squishing it in during the "summer break" giving only 6 weeks max.

Is this enough to be worthwhile?

Also, what are the funding options like?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

I've only just been accepted to U of C, but since doing an overseas elective is important to me, I've looked into it a bit. My understanding is that they can be done during the summer after first year, as you said. This includes 6 weeks of elective time, plus 2 weeks vacation, giving 2 months total.

The U of C does offer funding for overseas electives, but only if the elective is done in a developing country. I don't know the specifics of the funding, other than there is some available. :)

The school advises that 4 weeks is enough to make it worthwhile (most students do a 4 week elective). While I'm sure you could get more the longer you stay, it's unlikely any medical school will accommodate you taking more than 6 weeks internationally for an elective (unless you do it during your summer holidays). And you always will have more opportunities to do international electives once in residency—these can often be much longer.
