Olu
make sure that you fulfill the requirements for wherever you want to apply. complete these at a minimum! If you are more likely to attain a higher gpa (as in a significantly higher gpa) in the psych program then it might be advisable to do so. your biomed program still has a fair amount of heavy science courses in it, so if you struggle in these courses you might find it very difficult to boost your gpa. So as long as your required courses are covered then it might be advisable to build your gpa and perhaps with the extra time (as in extra time not spent studying your butt off in the super heavy science courses), working on a few ECs would help your overall application. Some schools weight their gpa calculations to the most recent two years (or something like that), so that also helps the argument for psych. Just my humble opinion of course, there are others who may advise you to stay in biomed but I think that boosting your gpa and tackling a few ECs will make for an overall increase in your odds of getting interviews (and subsequent offers) at the schools to which you want to apply. hope this helps
In_Valid
I need some input.......and I apologize in advance for the long post. I am going into 3rd year BSc in Biomedical Science, minor in Psych. My Overall GPA so far is just above 3.3, which I realize is not really competitive for most Ontario med applications. For the most part, my GPA is dragged down by less than stellar (3 x C+, 3 x results in science-related courses (mostly Chem) My gpa in my 6 humanities (psych) courses, however, is over 3.9 If I continue in Biomed, in the next 2 years I will have Molecular Biology (and lab), Intermediate Metabolism, and Microbiology as required courses, 8 science electives, and 6 psych electives. I MAY be able to raise my GPA a bit. I am thinking of changing to a BSc in Psych. I would thus be able to take all of my remaining credits in the Humanities, as I have completed all my Science requirements. By this route, I can almost guarantee myself a 3.8+ GPA in my final 2 years. I will, however, have to take extra credits (some 1st year) in order to catch up. This may mean a 5th year of undergrad. Just for info, I am francophone, Northern Ontario resident, mostly interested in applying to NOSM or Ottawa (french stream) Opinions, anyone ? Doesn't sound like a bad idea. But pscyh gets harder in the upper years (so I am told) so you may end up in the same situation. But If psych is your forte then go right ahead. Olu
an extra year of undergrad isn't necessarily a bad thing either actually- most schools like to see maturity and overall well roundedness so the extra year is a whole 'nother year to boost your ECs and grow and develop yourself and your experiences. It really doesn't hurt. I know it sucks waiting another year though... I did a 5 year undergrad however so I am talking with some authority on that subject. I took an extra year to do my schools co-op program and it the experiences really helped me a lot on my application. It gave me so much to talk about in my interview As long as you make good use of the extra year then its not that bad of an idea
avenir001
I agree with the points above. I would definitely switch to Psyc.
Wolvenstar
Lol that is what I am doing! Except I was a bio science major. I never really had an interest in environmental/plant biology and I didn't do as well in one of those courses, so now I am a psych major and I love the courses. My GPA between those two courses also jumped by alot.
