FAQ: What are my chances?

Recommended Posts

Do you think I should wait to apply to medical school until I haver completed 3 years of uni? Or should I still attempt it this year?

I mean, it never hurts to apply if you have extra money, but I would not get my hopes as a third year applying in any siduation just because its so tricky.

There's nothing wrong with finishing undergrad. The rush to get to med school and missing out on graduating with your friends works for some, but it's not the right choice for everyone

I would personally wait. I don't think your chances are great with your first year GPA. It's true that it doesn't hurt to apply, and it is helpful to practice applying. At the same time, as someone who applied broadly in a year where I wasn't competitive, it is tough on the morale when the rejections start coming out. Applying is also work. Calculate your GPA at the time of application and see where you stand at that point. If you are close... Sure, why not apply.

I think it might be worth to applying to McMaster (or another school with Casper) to see what Casper is all about, and the autobiographical sketch, even if you don't expect to get in.

Just wanted to get an idea of my chances for an interview. Currently in my first semester of second year, first year gpa was 92.1% and seems like it will maintain around there. Mainly worried about ECs for naq. Also am IP for BC and UBC is my primary goal.

Will Have at least this by time of application:

1) 50 hours over 8 months volunteering in a hospital (library cart, visiting patients)

2) 25 Hours over a month volunteering in a neurology clinic

3) 140 hours over 4 months working part time in an outlet store

4) 70 hours over 5 months working as a research assistant in a hospital (mostly patient interaction involved with this as well)

5) 140 hours over 8 months volunteering at the aquarium (gallery educator, doing crafts and facepainting to teach kids about marine life)

6) 20 hours over a month period involved in orientations

7) 24 hours over about a month volunteering during reading week education projects for various middle schools

From Highschool:

6) 35 Hours over 4 months working as a tutor

7) 60 hours for 2 years playing tennis

8) 110 hours over 10 months as a high school chemistry lab assitant

9) 30 hours over four months doing photography

10) 70 hours over 3 years in community service type club

I might pick up one or two other activites but supposed i had submiited an app right now, where would I stand?

Really appreciate your help as i im stressed right now with all this uncertainty, would be good to know where I am even if its on the negative side.

Thanks!

Uhhh do you have any employment? I'd say its kind of weak, only 2 of your activities run longer than a year. I had ~4,000 hours on my UBC app and three 500 hour 4 year activities im only expecting a 25 NAQ based on what i saw last year from people who applied.

They're only a second year though, so they seem to be missing a summer job but I think that's pretty good otherwise for 1 year....unless these are high school things too

Yup, currently working as research assistant, working as a sales associate in an outlet store and also working as a tutor. I think my gpa should get me a score of about 36 on the AQ so id need about 16-17 on the naq.

The bottom ones as indicated are from highschool (6-10)

Thanks for the advice!

This is old but I'm going to disagree, because none of us really know (just not a big enough sample size) what competitive stats are for an aboriginal applicant at each school. So I say apply!

Hi,

I am currently in my second year of specialist of molecular biology & biotechnology program. I was just wondering how much do english credits affect your application. I've read on several websites that a full year worth of english/expository writing is necessary for some schools. I am currently taking a general philosophy course and then biomedical ethics next semester. Are these enough to satisfy those requirements?

Also, could anyone comment on the significance of the research aspect of the ECs? What do you think about the Co-op program vs. NSERC award for summer research? Which would be more beneficial? I also considered that during NSERC, I could be doing some extra-curriculars such as teaching, volunteering etc, whereas during Co-op terms, I would be focusing solely on research.

Thanks in advance.

English means English. Not history, politics, or quantum chemistry

And there is no 'more beneficial'. I know you don't believe me though, but just trying to help you relax and enjoy your life until you apply

I was also wondering which med schools have English course requirements?

Google, my friend. Google is your friend.

I mean that nicely, it's critical that you read very closely and fully understand the requirements of each school. Email them if you have specific questions-you don't want to risk this stuff

What are my chances, planning to apply to U of T, McMaster, and Western next cycle.

GPA:

Year 1: 3.36

Year 2: 3.78

Year 3: 3.92

Year 4: TBA

MCAT: 511 - 130/125/126/130

Extracurriculars:

1 year peer tutoring in my high school year (100 hours)

Exec in two clubs during high school year

Captain of High School Swim Team

Won various subject awards

2 summers of hospital volunteering performing administrative duties (150 hours)

Exec in a club that schedules different campus events

Summer working at Tim Hortons (200 hours)

Research with 1 publication

I feel my GPA is pretty weak along with my MCAT and the problem is my EC's don't compensate for that. Should I even bother applying?

I can't say for UofT, depends on what you're wGPA is like.

Western is probably out if 125 is your CARS score, see what the cutoffs are this year but I'm guessing they'll be higher than 125

Mac, again, depends if 125 is your CARS score. They do a total GPA so it might be a long shot but maybe worth a try.

Why not Queens? They only look at 2 years and you could always throw in an application.

I'd consider maybe a 5th year though, then you could be good because it looks like you've just needed a little time to get on track

I would redo the MCAT and then reevaluate. You have plenty of time before next cycle. Definitely throw Queens into the mix as they take your most recent 2 years and according to premed101 stats, it appears that their MCAT cutoffs are usually slightly lower than Western's. As for a fifth year, you could go that route or do a 1 year Masters, however, doing that fifth year would increase your GPA for UofT and Mac if you were to be rejected next cycle.

Hi everyone. I'm halfway through my second year of Biochemistry at UVic and am hoping to apply to med school near the end of my degree. My first year GPA was 3.91 and my second year GPA is 4.0 so far, this is using the generous scheme where As count as a 4.0 (I have 87.5% in my first year due to two English classes and 92% second year so far). My worry is not in GPA, but in ECs, as I have barely any yet. While I am planning to start volunteering at a hospital in the next couple weeks, I feel like it is fairly late and that I screwed myself over by not doing so earlier. My ECs only include a brief 1 semester stint in Roteract (40 hours MAX) and as treasurer of high school student council for a year (whoopity doo).

However, I have worked at a drug store for the past 3 years, and have probably accumulated well over 1000 hours working there.

I've also won academic awards like the Governor Generals, Dean's list (if that counts), etc.

I also have an interesting anecdote for interviews about a severe neurological illness I recovered from in high school over the course of a year due to the help of my family doctor and hard work. (Probably not relevant, but figured I'd throw it out there)

Anyways, my main question is what kind of volunteer commitments in the next 2 years should I do in order to make up for this severe lack of ECs?

Thanks,

Anthony

Grades last forever, ECs can be built up over time and life experience.  You were smart to focus on your studies first, and have set yourself up very well academically for success.

Start to slowly integrate ECs and continued work experiences into your daily life, and start to learn how to best balance multiple commitments.

1. Do things that interest you.

2. Do them well and do them consistently over time.

3. Always look for ways to expand your roles and responsibilities.

4. Work towards roles where you have more responsibility and in leadership role.

5. Community service and betterment of others can be done in various ways - don't just do what others do because thats what you think you should do.

Don't feel that you need to volunteer in the hospital, but its a fine enough starting place. See how you like it, and try as many things as possible.

Finally, there will also be schools other than UBC, that would favour more strong academics and MCAT scores, so they may be options also. But being involved and gaining life experience through work experience and ECs, will help you perform better in interviews and also guide you to ensuring its the right decision to even apply in the first place.

Pretty sure you're using the wrong scale for UVIC. Unless it's changed since I applied, A =3.9 for OMSAS.

Looks like you're right, for OMSAS. My overall GPA so far would be 3.96 this semester and 3.87 first year, for a total of 3.9 overall. For some reason the grade conversion table on UVics website lists 85-89 as a 4.0.

79.453%, approximately. Although I can't say I read through all that.

I'm sorry, I just do not see the tangible point of such posts. You know your grades are at/above the stats posted on school sites, but without an MCAT, there's no way to even try and recommend what schools to apply to.

You're chances should be fine, and logically you should be able to tell this as well.

Hey everyone, I thought it'd be appropriate for my first post here to be a "What are my chances?" post :)

I'm more of a non-trad (applying to regular stream) since I graduated high school several years ago, then went to CEGEP, but didn't finish the program. Due to various personal reasons I dropped out, and worked for a few years. I was accepted to uni as a mature student, and studied part-time in uni while working full-time and living on my own. I made the definitive decision to apply to medical school, and went back full-time last fall. Med has been a dream of mine since elementary school, and I decided to make it a goal instead of just a dream.

I'll have prereqs for all schools except McGill, although I'm IP. I can apply to their non-trad stream without Physics though. I'm non-SWOMEN. IP: Quebec and Ontario

Here goes: (I know a lot of these commitments are new, but I plan on staying with them for 2-3+ years before I apply in 4th year)

GPA:

1st year: 3.45 (OMSAS) - part-time studies throughout

2nd year - 1st semester: 3.76 (OMSAS) - full-time 5 courses

I'll have a full course load for the remainder of my degree

Research:

1 year volunteering with an interdisciplinary food lab. Took on a lot of responsibility during this time.

1 panel presentation at a symposium (for the same lab)

Volunteering:

Oct. 2015-present: Crisis Line Responder

Oct. 2015-present: hospital volunteering doing leisure therapy for long-term care patients with Dementia and Alzheimer's

Employment:

Oct 2015-present: high school science and chemistry tutor

Registered tutor for 10 courses with my uni: Jan. 2016-present

8 years retail - 5 years managerial with 1.5 years as a store manager (over 5000 hours with my last job alone)

ECs:

A lot of travel; 2 solo trips

1 year: exec at a school club that promotes and facilitates students' involvement in the community

8 years: photography - I took two classes at a photography school; I recently signed a release for one of my photos with an airline company, and took photos of a mansion for a real estate agent once.

6 months: student coordinator of a food policy group (different from the food lab)

2 weeks: international volunteering trip to a 3rd world country - worked and lived in a community

1 year: student coordinator of the annual awards banquet for my CEGEP

1 year: Model UN Club (high school)

16 years - volley-ball - played on recreational teams, on school teams each year from grade 5, made it to OFSAA 1 year, 1 year in CEGEP, and was captain of the varsity team in my last year of high school. I still play occasionally.

6 years - provincial level figure skating (I stopped when I was twelve, so not sure if this is important)

2 years in high school: varsity rugby; made it to finals both years

Camping, snowboarding, tennis

MCAT: taking summer of 2017

Important question: Do I submit my transcripts from my failed CEGEP career?! I have at least 3 ECs from my time there, and I don't want to leave a gap in my application, but my grades were mostly failures there, and I don't know how I could put my ECs from my time there without submitting my grades as well...

I feel like I have an uphill battle, and would really appreciate some objective advice. I'm looking for an over-all review of my app so far, with an emphasis on my weak points! I need to know what they are so I can work on them.

Thank you!

EDITMy 2nd year 1st semester GPA is actually 3.92. I calculated it wrong the first time by converting my over-all GPA to OMSAS instead of converting the individual grades to OMSAS and then finding the average.

If you're IP for Quebec and able to apply to the french schools, you should be fine, check out their GPA averages as I am not aware, but I know that they are not that high. Your GPA is pretty low for Ontario right now unless you bring it up. Your EC's are okay, not too impressive, but not bad at all.
