FAQ: What are my chances?

Recommended Posts

Where do I have a chance?

4th year (from London, so Western won't care that my score is unbalanced)

MCAT:

VR: 12

BS: 11

PS: 8

Total: 31

cGPA: 3.28 (doesn't count grades from year on exchange; my GPA was 3.7 on exchange)

ECs: lots of leadership positions, LOTS of volunteering, most health-related, includes hospital volunteering & research

Applying to: Western, Queen's, McMaster, Toronto, McGill

What is your yearly breakdown?

Is it worth re-writing my MCAT?

GPA: >3.9

MCAT: 14/10/14 (P/V/B)

ECs: good, lots of leadership, founded a club

Research: none yet, hopefully next summer

3rd year from Ontario, eligible for NOSM

On AAMC practice tests I was averaging 12, and got as high as 14 on VR - nerves and a tough first passage threw me off a bit on test day. I know 11 is required for Western and Calgary - these aren't necessarily my top picks but I'd be happy anywhere and thus would like to apply broadly. I'm not applying til next year, so I could potentially rewrite next summer, but if I still have a decent shot at the other schools (including the US) I'd rather not.

With a 38 total I don't think a 10 will totally throw you out of the running. That's a solid score over all, if you think you can get >38 with a higher VR go ahead.

Good luck :)

Within Ontario: everywhere except Ottawa will give you a good shot. Nosm is fully dependant on your back ground otherwise apply broadly and hope one of your arrows sticks.

Hello, stranger.

1st yr: 3.95

2nd yr: 3.95

3rd yr: ?.??

cGPA 3.95

MCAT=12/12/12

From T.dot

ECs: Lots of leadership roles in student government, clubs, volunteered around in the community, nsercs every summer, publication(s) on the way.

I'm not too sure if I should apply as a 3rd year applicant and if so, to which schools. I think Toronto and Ottawa like people with research experience? I'm not too sure.

Unless you have your essays done for UofT I think it's out of the picture.

are you seriously deciding whether you should apply or not with less than 24hours left to submit your application?

however, if you maintain your gpa then you should have a good shot next year.

GPA.

1st: 3.78 (3.74 OMSAS)

2nd: 3.91 (3.84 OMSAS)

*UofT wGPA = 3.86

MCAT.

1st try: 33 (13PS, 9VR,11BS) and plan to write again

ECs.

- lots of ophthalmology-based work (i.e. 2 year clinical research ongoing, inner city school screenings, assisting an older blind man each week to complete daily tasks, unite for sight ghana in summer)

- esl teaching + tutoring at immigrant centre

- exec for couple student clubs (1 is sports-related + 1 inner city related)

- founded a program where researchers interact with students in a panel form and mixer (event each month)

- 2 summers of cultural-competency research in family med and nursing with 2 pubs

- founded a personal finance course for immigrants/refugees held by uni business students

- coordinating after-school sports program at inner city school each week

- independent study with professor about aboriginal health in canada

- started Social Equity subcommittee for Edmonton Youth Council (which works with city council on issues relating to youth)

Im IP for Alberta and hope to stay in the province for med. May consider UofT if I can bring up my marks or Queens if I can make last two years good. I'm more interested in socio-economic and ethno-cultural aspects of health so ive focused more on underprivileged populations in general (i.e. inner city, immigrants/refugees, aboriginal) but have also interest in eyes. Didn't want to volunteer at hospitals or be president of every student club on campus for the sake of med, just followed my passions and interests.

HELP ME! Do I have any hope? Where do I improve?
