Um, webspace and a domain name are really pretty cheap.

Actually, it's the opposite. NSLookup on the the premed101 domain points it to a company called RealWebHost (which I think is co-located in Alaska). A forum like this, running at times with a peak load of over 1000 users means it's likely running on a dedicated server (shared hosting could not handle the load) and so it's at least ~$150ish/month in hosting costs based on the prices at realwebhost.

Just my guess :)

Interesting!

You can go cheaper, I have set up similar sites with costs much lower than that. Still this site is pretty stable etc so it is being done well!

Silly question, but other than the webmaster of this site, who is Ian Wong? I always wondered how this site was set up/maintained :)

contrary to popular belief it does NOT take a ****load of money to run a website, especially one where the most advanced feature is a php powered forum. I ran one for 3 years and it was about $350 for the three years, and i was paying more than the minimum because I wanted ssh access (something you don't really need).

you only run into bandwidth trouble when you start streaming video (ie porn).

Ohh and that 150/month estimate from realwebhost is only an issue if you want your OWN server, but that really isnt necessary. Most people get a "virtual" host, where there are like 50+ websites all running from the same server, and as such your cost is split /50+.

A question that man has been tormented with since the dawn of time. Alongside other greats such as "why are we here," "what will happen to me when I die," and "are there other life forms in our solar system?"
