Median is half point when you lay out all observations so half of all records are above and half of all records are below

Mean is Sigma(x)/n(x) so outliers can influence the mean. Not half records are above/below this value. This is the summation of all records divided by the number of records.

You're all right, at least partially. Saying that the mean is average is true, but it's not the whole truth. The three ways of expressing average are mean, median, and the little used mode (which is the most common value in a set of data).

In saying that half are above the average and half are below, one insinuates the use of median as the standard of average. Of course, this statement wouldn't hold true if the standard of average selected were the mean or the mode.

Never ask an engineer to explain measures of central tendency.

The average is exactly equivalent to the mean and distinct from the median.

Average usually means mean. Anyway I've seen places use medians and that falls on 24. It's safe to say that the mean median mode cluster around 24 if they are not all on it, and to answer the initial question, you're not too old you're just about the right age. And would it matter if you're 24? You'll be done at ~32.
