UWO: 53 of 621 were accepted for class of 2012...

Yeah, like Colos said, the % of people that get in is irrelevant. The school can only accomodate a set number of students, 53 in Western's case, which doesn't vary from year to year. No matter how many people apply, only the top 53 can get in. So if 20,000 people applied, there would still only be 53 people getting in, no matter how competitive the rest were. So the level of competition changes from year to year, depending on how many people applied that year.

A lot of people apply, and while a good portion of them have very good academic records, some of them don't. The problem with Canadian schools is that there simply isn't enough space and there is too much discrimination between residents of different provinces. There are more than twice the number of residents in Ontario than Saskatchewan but yet only 2 Dental Schools. Ontario needs another one, Ottawa is a good fit.

It's ironic, because when you become a dentist, you'll probably want dental schools to close down. The CDA helps lobby to keep the number of graduating dentists down. It's for our own good.

Yah, Contach is right. We don't need more dental schools in Ontario. Have you been to the GTA? The saturation is crazy.

The number of dental schools should be a balance between serving society and ensuring dentists will have gainful employment upon graduation. Teacher's college, for example, has shifted this balance in favour of an excessive amount of graduates and many have trouble getting jobs/paying off student loans etc. This is irresponsible.

What we need in Ontario is a redistribution of dentists to certain parts of the province (mainly Northern Ontario). However this is very difficult to achieve, even with incentives.
