work and school

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.......

I am just wondering how feasible it is to work part time and study during the first year and even during later years of med school?

Hmmm....good question. However, I can't think of anyone I know in my class or others in clerkship who do hold part-time jobs on the side in med school. To be honest, the life of a med student is in itself a full-time job. It would definitely be hard to take on any more than that (although, I'm sure you'll hear of others who might have successfully held part-time jobs as well). What I think is that if you can afford not to work, then don't.

ladyluck08, on a risk vs reward basis, its just not worth it. You have come so far and even if one really needs the extra money, unless you have an EMS job like Jochi that allows so much time to study while being paid to wait for the occasional call, it is better to get a bank loan that can be paid back from future earnings. In another post, I recall someone saying at this stage of the game, one's time is worth more than money. However, there may be old age homes or nursing homes that require someone with basic emergency skills for overnighting that allows you to study or sleep while being paid, with the occasional call interupting you.

On the flip side, to give you a balanced view, while someone I know recently attended law school, she waitressed about 30 hours a week and attended law fulltime, doing her assignments, etc. However, in law school, there is an overload of unnecessary readings, and so, she took excellent notes, read the important cases; and texts, when she felt it was required. She graduated well and was not encumbered with excess useless information, passed her Bars, etc. In medicine there is no useless information, so different rules apply.
