ontariostudent
Just FYI, a tentative O-Week schedule has been posted! Looking forward to meeting everyone!! http://www.uoftmedsorientation.com/O-week%202009%20Schedule.htm
skye
Out of curiosity, why does O-week cost $161.00...?
blond_med
I know this might sound like a silly detail but I was wondering what dress code is there for some of the events outlined in the timetable? casual (jeans, etc) or semi-formal (dress pants with shirt) For example at the Dinner or the Dean's breakfast or the Dean's reception? Thanks Looking forward to the events!
9mAoTo
blond_med: It's not silly! On the O-week website, there's a sidebar button with "event info." Hasn't been updated yet but if you click on it it says it will have info on what to wear. skye: Guessing it's all the food, bus to the farm, farm itself, formal etc. I've organized events for large #s of people. Unfortunately, they get very expensive, very quickly. $160 for an entire week seems fairly reasonable to me...
Draff
Out of curiosity, why does O-week cost $161.00...? Even at $161, I'm almost sure the whole week is heavily subsidized... especially with the CN Tower event.
watermelon99
Does $161 include food at all events? is there any extra expenses? On another note. Is there any upper year that is selling their lab coat and dissection kit? I wish to buy them second-hand. Thanks!
skye
So at the restaurants and bars booked, we are not paying for our food (i.e. it's covered with the $160)?

drduiib
You will be paying for your own drinks and food at Maddy's and O'Grady's. At the CN Tower you'll be paying for your own drinks. In the spring plans were in place to have a used coat sale during the week. Geez RR, I can't believe you're still posting on the forum at this time. Go out and enjoy the cigarette-smoke-filled European air!
VanMD
Hey guys and gals, congrats on almost starting med school. It will be fun for sure. if any one is interested in used books please let me know. Here is the link clasified post. They are not the newest edition ie 2009, but you will soon realize that it doesn't matter.. medicine has not changed much in the past couple of years. http://www.premed101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35732
nothingdoing
event info is up! "Newly designed U of T backpacks" eh? Does this mean Toronto won't have the same super cool packs as the rest of the country?
Laika
event info is up! "Newly designed U of T backpacks" eh? Carefree
Yeah, from what I heard only one Ontario medical school did not take funding from MD Financial this year. So I guess now we know that Toronto is that one school.
nothingdoing
Meh, sounds great either way. Let's see how long it takes before it turns into a debate over corporate sponsorship and the medical profession...
ontariostudent
That's sort of annoying. As someone mentioned in the other thread, it's nice to think that when you are in places with other med students you can identify each other by your bags. Hope the U of T ones are way nicer to make up for it. Why wouldn't they take MD Financial funding??
5jy4
Long story, but yes, they'll be different from the MDM ones... I'm interested in hearing why this happened! Laika, would you mind sharing this long story?

Basically, from what I understand, it's because MD Financial is a private company. I think it's silly too, but I guess principles are principles. turion
Basically, from what I understand, it's because MD Financial is a private company. Yes. There will be no MD Financial/CMA med student bags distributed at UofT for the class of 1T3. The big wigs of faculty have decided that the bags represent a conflict for various reasons... One reason being it is a private company... It sucks for you guys, because they are nice bags and they really help you recognize other medical students from across Canada... I hate to say it but you guys got the shaft on this one.
Laika
I'm interested in hearing why this happened! Laika, would you mind sharing this long story? I've only heard this second hand, so I don't know the details. Before this year, U of T had a policy of not allowing pharma companies to sponsor undergrad events or give out free stuff, etc. Recently, one faculty member pushed for the policy to be extended to other companies... and the MD backpacks were the victim. A lot of us think it's ridiculous.
MP10
if it really was done for conflict of interest purposes, i'd support it. the pharmaceutical industry already has way too much influence on doctors, at least in the US, but also in Canada. it would have been a great backpack, but we should stop feeling we're entitled to such freebies. and i hope no one takes this personally! MP10
and btw..i know MD financial is not a pharmaceutical company...but same principle applies
