eyeopener
Hi everyone, I apologize for asking what appears to be a question that can be answered by some easy research; however, the website is not clear as to whether it is recommended to have a degree (so you can apply beforehand i.e. in your third year), or if it is mandatory. Thanks for your help in clarifying this!

A-Stark
In general, you must have completed a four-year undergraduate degree prior to beginning med school at Dal. They even say as much on the website: 3. A four-year degree: The Admissions Committee also recognizes that appropriate preparation for the study of medicine can be acquired through many varied educational backgrounds. The minimum requirement for entry, however, is a baccalaureate degree in any discipline. Although candidates with three-year degrees are occasionally admitted; a four-year degree is strongly preferred.
xi88
It is possible, although significantly more difficult, to gain admissions with a 3 year bachelor degree, and I've only heard of 2 people who've actually done it.
PipeDream
Hey, I am going in to my 3rd year and I was planning to apply this year. I guess my ultimate goal would be to make it to the interview stage this year so that I can have experiance and nail it in my 4th year. Do you guys have any Idea how much they discriminate against 3rd years ? My application is fairly competitive Oh and I am NB resident hoping to go to the UNBSJ campus. Judging by what people have posted in other threads I gather that this would probably have gotten me an interview if I was in fourth year, howabout as a 3rd year student? My program offers an option that I can graduate with a bachelor degree after three years if i choose to.
A-Stark
Well, your academics are okay but not exceptional. I don't know how they decide whether to give interviews to applicants in 3rd year, but I would not say that your chances are that great. That's just my guess though. astudentis
Your GPA and MCAT is average, however, you ECs look good. So depending on the pool of applicants for next year, you might have a chance. Usually, the third years that do end up getting in have 3.9ish GPA with a 33+ MCAT (just from reading past threads). You might get lucky though, just because UNBSJ will be a new school, and maybe... just maybe not too many people would prefer to go there; however, majority of NB applicants would now be obligated to go there if they can't compete for OOP seats at rest of the schools across Canada. But there is no harm in trying. All you have to do is write your essay, get References, and hope. However, for Dalhousie or MUN, I would probably call and ask admissions office about how strict they are at having a degree completed before acceptance. From experience, in order to get an interview while in third year, you have to apply for graduation, so that your transcript says that your graduation is pending for the end of the year. If you end up not getting in, dont worry about having to graduate. Withdrawing your graduation application is very simple, and should just be a simple form at the registrar's office. Halcyon
Oh and I am NB resident hoping to go to the UNBSJ campus. Any word on when the new NB med school is opening up? I haven't heard anything for a while; but, then again, I don't live out East.

Haha, I was gonna ask what had you concerned about that . Things seem to still be on track with it, so I guess that means it opens in September 2010.
