neuro1986
After speaking with the U of BC admissions people, they were unable to provide me with the information I am looking for (according to their policy of non-disclosure). My university is on a 4.0 scale where an A= 4.0 and an A-=3.67. My university does not award A+. In order to receive an A, the scale is a 93%-100% and for an A- the scale is an 86%-93%. Although someone remarked on this forum that my A's (4.0) would be transferred to 4.0's on the U BC 4.33 scale, this doesn't seem appropriate. Another person stated that U BC would use my university's percentage scale in order to determine how to convert the GPA. Can someone who is in my situation (A= 4.0 with a similar associated percentage, A-=3.67 with a similar associated percentage) please tell me how the U BC converted your GPA to their scale? I am most interested in hearing from people who can directly speak to their experience with GPA conversions similar to mine or someone who can provide reliable information- not speculation on the possible policies on this matter. Thanks!
AndrewB
Unfortunately, unless your school provides percentages with your letter grades it appears they convert an A to 85%, A- to 80% etc.
Microbiodude
I was under the impression they simply convert your letter grade to the lowest value your school gives it. So for you, since A = 93 - 100%, you A becomes a 93% and then you simply take the average off all your percentage converted marks. So: Transcript: A = 93% A- = 86% Your average is 89.5% You official transcripts should have a legend on it showing the range each letter designates. When they told me my academic average based on their calculation it was a percentage mark not one on a 4.33 scale.
AndrewB
Microbiodude is right I think. I forgot that your conversion scale might be included with your grades. If it is they take the lowest percentage to achieve that letter grade.
leviathan
So they take the lowest percent of what an A is at YOUR school, or what an A is at UBC?
jared
If your GPA is on a 4.33 scale, I believe UBC will use their own scale. If your GPA is on a 4.0 scale, microbiodude may be right in the UBC will use the percentages from YOUR school but I haven't come across this in a confirmed manner. There are other theories floating around that UBC simply has its own 4.0 conversion scale, which makes sense in that it would be a lot more work to custom convert everybody with a different 4.0 scale. This may also be why UBC doesn't disclose their grade conversion methods. To answer neuro1986, I'm almost positive that UBC doesn't convert GPA from a 4.0 scale using their own 4.33 scale. You asked for non-speculative information but I doubt you will find such a source since nobody actually gets to see their converted marks.
