Ye I don't have a good feeling about OMSAS. Stupid MCAT.

Don't you guys think that the system used by some ON schools is very inefficient?

Cutting out applicants who don't meet cutoffs in any section seems like a very easy thing to do, but by doing so they miss out on tons of applicants who would make a fantastic doctor but who just have a lower GPA (by like 0.01) or who fall a point short in one of the MCAT sections. Some don't even look at the ABS properly before giving out interviews. I think that's just ridiculous.

I like US that way. It's more about the fit there. Not just numbers.

Ditto. That's probably why I've put 100X more effort into US schools applications than on OMSAS.

And yes, OMSAS is really inefficient. The fact that they make us have to click on various pages simply to get the necessary info for our sketch is stoopid (one page to enter general description, then click again to add more info, oh wait you forgot the verifier number so you have to go back and pull up that list, then repeat:mad: ).

Yeah they have these little things to get rid of as much applicants as possible... like the rule to create the account by September 15. seriously why does it matter? i almost missed the deadline this round. i would have killed myself if that happened

it's a very shallow system unfortunately

Amazing!! :D Do you happen to have ties to MN? I read on sdn that without ties, interviews were out. Hoping that's not the case....

ETA: nevermind, your last post popped up while I was writing mine.

like i said, no ties. for that question i just talked about how i liked to take advantage of the parks in montreal while i was living there...minnesota is big on parks. only connection i could come up with!

lololol. Nice answer. I couldn't think of something like that. :P

BTW, I don't want to miss out on the OMSAS rant train. I completely agree with the ridiculous cutoffs. It's just an easy way for them to make giant cuts without putting effort into looking at who the person is. All the schools say they are looking for a well-rounded person, but when they only look at students who make cutoffs of 11,11,11,Q or something like that (*cough*Queens and Western *cough*), it is inevitable that they will be accepting more gunners(as Georgetown liked to put it) than other schools.

What I don't get is how US schools have the man-power and willingness to go through 5 times more applications and still do it better. I know they have more $ but come on, even the poor ones don't have hard cut-offs.

wrighm, good luck tomorrow then. :) All of that extra sun and warmth is bound to give you more brain power. Or a tan. Either way it's a good thing. :P

Thanks. In retrospect that was a very stupid move on my part. 1) I'll be so drained during interviews from the travel and stress of interviewing 2) I won't have time to improve my interview skills and responses between interviews.

Should have just shelled out the money to fly back every week or so.

I don't want to miss the OMSAS rant train either!!

AMCAS >>> OMSAS. AMCAS is so much more user friendly, and it even puts all your entered data into a PDF so you can see how the adcoms will see your file. :P

Rolling admissions process is awesome. I think one of the hardest parts of the application process is waiting... Submitting OMSAS in late September or early October, then waiting 4 months until January to hear back from schools is definitely not fun.

Rach, I personally would have compiled all my interviews into one since it saves a ton of money travelling back and forth (the primaries and secondaries are already so costly on their own). Also, flying back and forth is just as exhausting...once I return from a trip, I'm barely settled before I'm flying out again. At least you're getting it over in one go. It'll also help you compare the schools much easier, since you're seeing them one right after the other.

It is possible to improve interview skills, but if you prepare properly, you will do fine. I think part of the interview process is to see if you'll fit in and that's not something that can be changed in a matter of days or even weeks. So...don't worry and have fun!! Best of luck in your travel/interview week!!

Lemme join the OMSAS train. CHOO CHOO!!! (derail). It's terrible. How are you to adequately describe an activity in 150 char or less? Considering the fees for applying to OMSAS/school are similar to AMCAS secondaries, it is a disgrace that they cannot meet the same quality in assessing applicants and have to impose cut-offs.

My cumulative GPA is terrible, but hopefully it pays off in the US. I have a shot in Ont. , but the only school that'll look is UWO. I should be able to interview as long as the cut-offs don't increase. For $300 including transcripts for applying to one school, I better get the red carpet treatment.

Yea, I guess I got really lucky. Does anyone know how to travel from Toronto to Case Western? Greyhound? Plane?

I have an interview there on Monday. So I'm driving down on Sunday and doing a marathon drive home after the interview. Apparently the ride is less than 5 hrs from Toronto... I'll let you know if that's true or not after Mon.
