soaring-sun
Hi, If i am planning to applying to US schools next year but take the DAT this november, do I indicate the US schools when i register for the DAT? How does this process work? Any advice would be appreciated.
stresso
Yeah, you do. The registration fee includes 5 schools only though.
soaring-sun
So if I take it in nov and feb, do both DAT scores go in? Do I get to choose which one to look at?
stresso
i think that if you send your feb scores, they will also see your nov scores. But you can only "choose" between the 2 scores if you wait to get your scores in the mail after both DATs, and then pay extra to get them sent to the schools or your choice. You don't have to choose 5 schools when you register for them
Contach
So if I take it in nov and feb, do both DAT scores go in? Do I get to choose which one to look at? some schools will look at your highest scores, some will only look at your most recent scores. you will have to check with each american school you apply to. as said above, you will have to tell the CDA which scores you want sent where. i would advise you to not rely on the february dat. think that you only have 1 shot, put a lot of pressure on yourself to study, and you will do well and get the test over with once and for all. it is my opinion that if you give yourself a 'way out' or a 'back-up plan' that you won't be as motivated to study, knowing you have 'another shot'. february dat scores get to american schools VERY late in their application cycle. by that time, a lot of the spots are taken already and you are competing vs more people for fewer places... so i don't recommend relying on your february dat scores at american schools. stresso
I thought that for the feb DAT it takes about 6 weeks to get the scores, and then a couple weeks after that to get to the US dental schools. It would still be before June though, right?

soaring-sun
thanks for the rely stresso and contach. Yea i agree with you that i should go all out and get it over with at the first attempt. But isnt it generally harder to score high in nov dat sinice a lot of people had time to study during summer? Also, why is feb dat too late for US schools? Doesn't the cycle begin in mid may by which the dat score would have long came out? I thought about US DAT but orgo is just hell for me... am i at a disadvantage with canadian DAT? I know some schools say there is no 'difference' but i find in some cases, the official answer is not always the correct one.

A lot of American schools advertise equality between US and CDN DAT's, but some people on here say that they'll favor you more with a good US DAT score as opposed to the same score with the CDN DAT. I have my own quick question though. I know that DAT scores are good for 3 years. Now I just wanted to get it clarified that I DON'T have to indicate which schools I want the marks sent to when I write the exam? If I decide to lets say send my scores to like 8 American schools then I would just have to get them to send it to them when I want? I was just trying to figure this out because lets say I write the Feb DAT and send it to Canadian schools, but then realize I didn't do as good as I thought so I write the Nov DAT and do much better. How would the US schools get my better marks? Cause I know some schools only take your best scores while others take into account both. Would that mean if you send a school that takes into account both scores your best DAT score, they would still know your lesser score?

No, you don't have to indicate which schools you want your marks sent to when you register for the exam. You can always do it after you get your marks. Also, in the AADSAS application you have to indicate your most recent DAT score (not the best) and the date of any future DATs you plan on writing. Hopefully this answers your question... soaring-sun
I am a bit confused. You are saying that you can choose the schools to send your marks AFTER the exam without additional cost?
stresso
No, I didn't say that. You can get your scores sent after you receive them, however there's an additional cost. For the Canadian DAT, they charge you an administration fee and $x per school. They will charge you these fees whether or not you chose 5 schools included at the time of registration.
