GPA and MCAT cut-offs

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I was just wondering what the GPA and MCAT cut-offs for Western have been the past few years. I saw last year's cut-offs but I was wondering if those are fairly consistent from year to year (this year it was B-11/P-9/V-10/W-Q/GPA-3.75).

Also, do you think I would be 'safe' to meet the cut-offs to get an interview?

My Stats: B-12/P-11/V-11/W-Q/GPA-3.9 (a little concerned about the Q...)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Last year the GPA cut off was raised from 3.70 (which it was for a while) to 3.75. The MCAT cut offs have been stable for a few years now.

Of course no one can answer the "are you safe" 100% but I would say you are doing pretty well! Western has never had the WS section cut off higher than Q before (I believe).

Best of luck!

Hey! Quick question:

I'm doing my ugrad at UWO combining medsci & business (Ivey). My top 2 gpa years avg is around 3.87 without any adjustments. MCAT = 32S (P12V9B11). Are the mcat cutoffs strict at 10-10-10? Even for a student from uwo? (Unfortunately, I'm not from there or any other small town) :(

Any thoughts would be appreciated! :)

The cut-offs are strict at 10-10-10 if you are not from the SWOMEN area. However, if you went to high school in the SWOMEN area your cut-off will be 8-8-8 and you will be required to bring your HS transcript to the interview.

thanks for posting that actually! I was considering rewriting my 31S with a 9 in VR, so I guess I will now..

Yeah I would second that - I doubt it would drop below 10 as well.

Nice WS score by the way :) Just reinforces the annoying way the MCAT seems to "seek out" your one weakness and attempts to nail you!

are people who meet the western cuttoffs guaranteed for an interview?

my cGPA for is 3.79 and the one for best two years is over 3.8 and mcat is 12/10/14/T

I wanna tell my mom I atleast have one interview...lol you know parents..they want to know the chances..

Officially no, as they have the right to reject any application, blah, blah...

However in reality, if you hit the cut offs (and it looks very much like you will) then we will be seeing you soon at Western for your interview!

I mean do you guys really think the cuts will go up again? I mean the last 2 years the rise in cut offs is largely a result of the double cohort effect, so the way I see the trend, I think Western will probably restore their 10/10/10 Q and 3.7 cut off for this coming cycle of admissions.

No one can be completely sure, but personally I really doubt they will increase this year. There is no obvious additional pressure coming in from somewhere and the school just bumped the slots by about 10% and will so again next year.

Now whether that means things stay the same, or the GPA drops, MCAT drops or both is pretty much a guess :)

I would say that the economy will be increasing pressure for people to reapply since the job market is dry. Don't blame them. Job security is probably everybody's dream now.

I really don't think this is a significant number to affect the stats that dramatically. I am sure there are certainly a number of ppl who do...but as most of us know by now, you can't simply just decide to apply to medicine...the application process is a journey in itself.

PS. CDN economy is climbing back up.

Journey yes, economy climbing yes (very slowly and yes, people are still losing jobs). I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the job market for sciences in Canada is pretty bleak at the moment. People may be more inclined to try again after losing their job or not being able to find work right out of university. If you would have actually been out in the real world workforce and lose your job like I did, you definitely have an incentive to find something that'll be more stable and permanent. I will make it clear that I've had this goal in mind for years and have been working at it, but since being laid off I've had extra incentive to go back and rewrite the MCAT and get in, and I've been dipping my feet in the US too.

There may not be the same double cohort amount of apps, but do expect a higher than normal amount.

Again, I'm sure there will be a number of ppl who do apply for those reasons (and very valid reasons), but not enough that it will change the affect the cut-offs.

You are right I can't talk from experience, but I did a Master's myself and am aware that getting a job in the sciences isn't that easy. But this has been the case in recent years, as now days everything is competitive!

In either way I agree that there will be an increase in ppl who are now applying to medicine because as you said who doesn't want job security (although I argue that ppl would want job security regardless of the state of the economy). In anyway, it will not be large enough to offset the cut-offs.
