NAQ: Would this score in the "area of high performance" category

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I would appreciate your comments on the potential to score points on my involvement with research in the "area of achivement/high performance" for the NAQ.

As a part of a post-graduate program, my research project involved composing the application (to the health authority Ethics Review Board), letters of consent and research proposal (including methodology).

The aspect I hope to obtain credit for is being only the 3rd ever clinical trial from my health authority to be registered with clinicaltrials.gov as a prospective clinical trial. In addition, with respect to the health authority, this research was noted to be one of few prospective, randomized trials obtaining deferred consent approval.

Thank you for your response.

If its something you invested alot of time into (and it sounds like you have), and achieved a distinguished result, I don't see why not. When I was thinking about this area when I applied last year, I was thinking about things that I have done long-term to achieve a final result. But really, I don't think the categories are definites and absolutes --sometimes you just have to "guess" where to put things.

good luck!

Thanks for the reply,

I will further qualify my earlier description.

Yes, in addition to the above mentioned involvement, I helped screen new patients admitted daily to the ICU, ensured both the enrollment of patient's meeting the criteria was in a timely manner and the first doses of study drug were delivered and administered appropriately.

Throughout the study, I was responsible for setting/chairing meetings with the physicians and allied health professionals involved in the study and communicating to the group regarding ongoing progress, issues and concerns.

Furthermore, I was responsible for collecting, assessing and incorporating the data (study/patient) into a manuscript, which has not yet been published. I also created a poster and presented the study findings at a regional resident/preceptor research evening.

Regards,

MB

There is nothing wrong with the way you've interpreted category. If you notice however, that your entry needed further explanations (twice) to convey what you hoped to come across the first time. It might be a good idea to re-write your blurb - regardless of where it ends up on your app.

Hey,

You read my mind re: the importance on phrasing information to best fit the category!

A follow-up, would you think that I can split the experience into 2 sections. Use the "3rd ever clinical trial to be registered with clinicaltrials.gov" in the area of high performance and the actual activities associated with the research in the leadership category?

I hope from my adequate description I will be awarded for the many qualities displayed during my involvement, regardless of the "little box" I attempt to categorize under.

Thanks,

Hi Mill Bay, don't write the same experience under more than one category. The adcom will realize that they are the same thing and may mark you down for padding your application. I would say put it under the high performance category since that one is relatively more difficult to fill up. I agree that the wording is important, the blurb needs to be concise and terse and convey the maximum number of points using the least amount of words.
