another what are my chances post

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am a third year applicant, and just want a general opinion on my chances of admission given my gpa, EC's and MCAT score.

EC's:

-Camp Goodtimes counselor (current)

-Volunteer in Cancer clinic (current)

-Youth in Leadership Philanthropy Program (raise money for cancer research, for the BC Cancer Foundation) (current)

-Student Leadership Program at University

-Student Orientation tour guide (two years)

-TallShips 2008 marketing and sales volunteer

-Biology 11 Teacher Assistant

-Special Olympics volunteer

-Art student throughout highschool, won awards for art, including art work published in a magazine

-Have played piano for 7+ years, with piano lessons and royal conservatory exams

-Have been in a performance dance company, danced for over 10years

-Musical Theatre throughout highschool

-Work in a senior retirement home as a care giver/meal times

-Tutor for 3+ years for high school math, bio and chem, and up to second year university biology, chemistry (and organic chem)

-Student Orientation Information Assistant (work with new students/parents to help facilitate a smooth transition into University)

MCAT

BS: 9 PS: 9 VR:10 WS: S (yeahhh thinking of re-writing this...)

My biggest concern is the MCAT; I was really disappointed with my BS and PS scores, as on all of my practice tests I was easily getting 10's and 11's, and my grades in these classes were all A's...that being said, given that I got good grades in Bio and Physical sciences, is this a particularly big problem? I realize UBC does not place much weight on the MCAT, and I would rather put more time and energy into some good EC's versus studying again for the MCAT...

My goal for this application is just to get an interview, so that next year I will have gone through the process and will have a much better chance of getting in. Do you think I have a shot at getting an interview at least?

Thanks!! Good luck everyone with your applications!!

Hi Schater, not that I know about UBC, being from Que., you look good to go and I suggest that you widen the net to apply thru OMSAS to some in ON, like UofT where MCAT is used only for "red flag", all you need is a knock-out 1,000 word Essay containing the material they want that needs to capture their attention and Mac only looks at V on MCAT, so answer their 5 ABS Questions competitively each in 700 characters incl spaces each, and again you are good to go. Bon't put all your eggs i n one basket. Good luck!

I agree that it really depends on whether you're in province or not. UBC only has only 12 oop spaces and very few students applying with only 3 years of undergraduate work get in each year (usually less than 20 students). That said, I would apply anyway, because it will give you an idea of what you need to do for the next year if you don't get in.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Yup I am an IP student.

Based on everyone's opinion, my MCAT score shouldn't be a big thing to worry about? (at least for UBC) It would be AMAZING to get in after third year...but lets face it, thats not too likely!

I figure I'll probably re-do it anyways so then I have better chances at other schools too just in case UBC doesn't pan out.
