Where to put TA and research employment?

Recommended Posts

Hello

Originally I was placing my graduate research assistant and TA experiences under employment (since I was being paid by the university), but noticed the following posted in the Employment section on OMSAS:

"Do not list research positions which are part of your graduate training or honours program. These should be listed under the Research section."

This seems less intuitive because of the specific details required under the 'Add/change details' section for 'Research'. For example, what do I put under 'Type of publication' or 'Title of Project'? How have other graduate students overcome this problem?

Thanks.

I was wondering a similar thing... it seems my nserc summer work as a student research would intuitively go under research... but then i know it is also important to highlight work ethic and such, as in employment... this research job is 9-5, monday to friday, and it seems this might go overlooked as a full time summer job if i put it under research... hmm...

List it under employment eventhough specifically it was mentioned to put it under research? It was also mentioned that NSERC undergrad summer work goes under awards not employment...just a heads up!

i was also thinking of putting that under employment too... but i guess not? and i had the same question about the research stuff... cuz ive been volunteering in a lab and was wondering if that should go into research or volunteer

Yea, I saw that, but it doesn't make sense to me, since it IS research (ie. what if you publish a paper from it, then it would definitely go under research... I am in the process of writing one up with my prof, and although I know you aren't supposed to write "in preparation", I still think it would go under research nevertheless... I did put the NSERC USRA Scholarship under awards, but then I also put the research under research, explaining my role, etc.

Guys,

The sketch is meant to take a glance at your overall activities. So for you TA and research teaching related work, it can go under employement if you want Or you can lump it into research (in the case of the NSERC). No committee in the right state of mind would pick at those things. At the end of the day, place it in the category you think best fits. In my own application, i placed TA hours under employement. No biggies.

Good luck :)

if we completed a summer nserc scholarship but have not published yet, how can we include it in research because we'd have nothing to write under type of publication...

i also don't know where to put my summer-paid research position from last summer... i found where it says not to put it under employment, but how could i put it into research? what would i put under publication type?

Im sorry where did you get those details about what specifically can go under employment?

I am trying to find out more information about classification of certain items in the sketch and any info would be appreciated. Thanks

EDIT:nvm

Same question...I'm having a hard time finding the link to this info in COMPASS...

list any activity under employment, then go to add/change details and it will appear in the top paragraph. it will tell you to include nserc in awards and that you shouldnt include research training that was part of your graduate or honors degree
