Personal statement for application - word count?

Recommended Posts

I would try to follow the 1000 word limit. I don't know how much 1127 "appears" above the limit - if it doesn't appear too much over, then that's fine. However, there's never such a thing as not being able to cut any more out...perhaps try finding someone who hasn't read it before to help you with some further editing and refinement.

You are out of your mind...try this..they will not read one word after 1,000 words, so you proceed on the basis that you believe suicide is the right method to impress them. All things are possible, do what you have to do, if you expect to be considered a credible candidate. I would cut it down for you within 15 minutes w/o losing anything important but as one of your competitors, I must recuse myself.

Get someone else to help edit it with you--they clearly state that they will be unimpressed if you go over the word count (they state that you should be careful not to use all the characters available as it may take you over the word-count--they really don't like it if you don't pay attention to detail).

Go over one word and you really will become JohnDough

To OP: The only way keeping it at 1127 words is gonna help you is if your last paragraph of 127 words details why you actually hate medicine, are only doing it because of your parents and for money, and you like punching kittens for fun. :D

Darn...gotta take that out of my essays as well...

The extra 127 words is just going to piss them off. Some profs, etc. don't mind going over limits...but when someone deliberately tells you NOT to, then DO NOT.

Have you tried pasting your essay into the text box provided on OMSAS. I thought that the box itself limits you to the number of characters set by uoft. Like, it would cut everything past the 1000th word. Maybe I am wrong.

No--there is an 8000 character limit which will permit many, many words over the 1000 limit (especially if you use a lot of tiny words...lol). That won't be of any use for this particular essay.

Has anyone ever submitted a statement over 1000 words and been successful? Mine is 1,127 right now and cannot cut any more out....

I can comment on this. John, try your best to stick to the word limit, but going over a bit won't kill you at all. Last year I submitted my essay to OMSAS and it was over 1000 words, maybe 1100 or something like that. It's not like you go over the limit and BANG your app is in the trash. I also know a few members of my class who had over 1000 words. It's fine if it doesn't seem like you stuck in an extra 5-6 paragraphs from what normal length essay should look like. Best of luck :)

I am merely trying - admittedly dramatically - to encourage common sense to prevail, in te very best interests of the OP. I am upset that someone would consider being so foolish as to make themselves a less credible candidiate - and with one's eyes open. What will be, will be, I will chill....

Well, it's a legitimate question really...especially considering that most profs only place a word limit to guide students, so one should always question the leniency.

your funeral, exceed the limit, you increase my chances.....I would much prefer a level palying field, but if you insist to commit suicide against reason, don't complain when you are not invited to an interview......remember these posts

its not like they're going to sit there and count every last word to make sure you have 1000... as long as it looks like its 1000 then it should be ok, but 100 words over is a bit too much

They copy, paste and use programs to count words. They actually state in their fine print that people should pay attention to the detail of the word count.

I agree with Cnussey, it takes about 2 seconds to do a word count with a program...don't take your chances by going over the stated limit!

This one is so true, I remember doing an assignment with 400 word limits, I had 398, covering every single ground possible within that word limit, then in the end I lost 1/5 of the marks for not mentioning another thing, and I went to the prof, she acknowledged the parts I mentioned but said I missed one part and showed me another students response, it was almost double the length of mine and I told her your damn word limit is 400 that person has almost 800 wtf is your problem? and she is like "oh really?" and then its the silence and said she would reconsider my mark. After a month the response on the email is you won't get that mark, still going over a bit is fine but you have to answer the question fully. Then I raged............

Yup. If you're getting close, it's best just to ask. Some profs just stop reading past page # X and will remove marks for anything that is missing (although it's including in the extra pages).
