The Dean's List

Hey guys,

I assume that a lot of you guys are familiar with this list and a lot of you have probably been on this list before. I'm curious as to what advantages this has other than the academic honour. For instance, would I be able to walk into the Dean's office and ask for a moment of his time and speak with him? I would like to ask if he knows anybody that is willing to let me shadow them.

I recently bumped into an old co-worker and he had told me that the Dean is able to write reference letters for you as long as you are on this list. Please let me know what you guys think and know. Thank you.

haha, i've never heard that before; i'm pretty sure that the Dean's List is just an academic honour... you can always try to see if the dean will see you, but it's not going to be anything like:

"Excuse me, Dean, do you have a minute?"

"I'm very busy, sorry."

"I'm on the Dean's list---your list."

"Oh, in that case, of course." :P

I'm just curious, who are you looking to shadow? doctors? I doubt the dean would know any doctors for you to shadow... or are you referring to professors or something? but I don't see what relevance that has to meds

as per the reference letter, you should probably on ask him/her for a letter if he/she knows you really well, regardless of whether or not you are on the Dean's list

The dean's list is just an academic honour and nothing more. The dean usually doesnt meet with students unless there is some special circumstance that could not be resolved through the professors or department heads. Also, unless you've worked with the dean, a letter of reference from the dean is not going to be a good idea, as he/she doesnt actually know you and really cant write a good reference (and the med school adcom knows that).

Yeah, wouldn't almost any competitive pre-med be on the Dean's list? I mean, at my school you're automatically on the Dean's Honours List if you have a GPA over a certain number (faculty dependent).

I like being on the Dean's Honours List so I can go eat the free food at the gathering they have, hehe! :)

At my university, you automatically get on the Dean's List if you pay tuition, you don't need to even write exams.jk But you are invited to join this phony honourary society that many join, all you need to do is pay a fee and it is a scam, prob created by Madoff relatives.:(

I thought you got Dean's Honour List if you were in the top 10% of your faculty, no?

I think there are less people on this list than you would think. I remember at convocation watching people get a little bit of an extra clap when "Dean's Honour List" was mentioned after their name as they crossed the stage.

In my opinion, I would include it. You really have nothing to lose.

Yes, you are absolutely right, and it is an honour and accomplishment.

Yea, at my school it is like a B or B+ to get on the list, which is probably pretty much every med school applicant... the question was never if it should be included or not... I think most people include it nevertheless, just because it adds a bit of academic resonance to your autobio, regardless of how common it is... the original question was if being on the dean's list wil lget you a reference letter from the dean or something lol

  • 2 weeks later...

Honestly, I didn't get on the Dean's List except my last two years of undergrad.

At UofT, in order to get on the Dean's List you need minimum 3.7 gpa for that year of study. I don't know the situation with other schools.

If you want a reference letter from the Dean, my biggest suggestion is to apply or inquire about sitting in on the Academic Appeals Council. They usually deal with student petitions.

My friend who is now at UBC Med, sat on the committee and was able to get his foot in the door with the associate dean.
