lullaby
Hi everyone, I'm a high school student who is aiming for med school. However, I've chosen to major in dental hygiene. Is that acceptable? From what I heard, you can major anything, and apply into med school (no I'd rather not apply for dental school). Is that true? Please give me some useful advice on my goal which is to get into med school :-) THANK YOU in advance.
Monopoly
Will you be satisfied working as a dental hygienist if you don't end up going to med school?

AndreaM
I'd say it depends on your dental hygiene program and where you taking it. Some dental hygiene programs are certificate programs and not degree programs and I don't know if certificate programs are counted towards your GPA and course total for UBC. You might want to check with UBC's admissions office to find out for sure. In general though it does not matter what your undergraduate degree is in. Some people get in with the traditional BSc and others do Fine Arts programs. So long as you have the pre-requisites in there somewhere you should be fine. I plan to take dental hygiene in VCC, and finish my 3rd and 4th year in UBC where they offer the degree program. Once I finish that, I plan on applying for med school. Star1234
Please don't take this the wrong way as I am not implying anything...I'm just curious. Why would you go into medicine after a degree in dental hygiene and not dentistry?
lullaby
Please don't take this the wrong way as I am not implying anything...I'm just curious. Why would you go into medicine after a degree in dental hygiene and not dentistry? I love learning about the human body, and I love solving mysteries. I like the idea of finding out what's wrong with a person.. why they're feeling this way, that way, bla bla. I do care for people also, but not as much as solving puzzles. I like suspense. that's why I wanna become a doctor. however, I don't wanna stay in school for 4 years and end up with a job that doesn't involve with helping people and solving mysteries. just in case I fail at getting into a med school, I'll always have something to fall back on. it sounds cowardly, but I'm just being realistic. I have older siblings and they have friends that majored in something (psychology for example) and just ended up working at Starbuck's. I'd rather be a dental hygienist than a barista. djmackj
from what I know about the UBC dental hygiene program, you will not be taking courses in your 3rd and 4th year and instead will be doing rotations/clinical practice and b/c of this you technically do not fulfill the minimum credit requirements for any medical school. If you did want to pursue med school after your program, you will need to tack on 2 more years of university.

iwh333
and yes, there are clinic portions of dental hygiene that you have to be aware of. As well, i'm not sure if UBC Med will accept your 2 years at dental hygiene at VCC. Best to email them.
lullaby
you don't have to become a doctor to help people? nor solve mysteries for that matter. lullaby
i think you have been watching too much house. i am not even in UG yet but i imagine that there's a lot more to medicine than that(but i heard radiology is similar to solving puzzles). I've gotta admit it, I wish I can be like House. and yes, that youtube video does have a point. I'm not in any way trying to get into this path just because I wanna be in that kind of setting. So don't get the wrong idea.
