stressed
I just read through the thread specific for research in the general premed discussion section but I am feeling a little conflicted right now. As of now I have no research experience and I was told by some people that UBC asks about research experience in the application. I got in touch with a prof who is accepting volunteers but the time commitment is a minimum of 10 hours a week. I have a full course load (5 courses) plus other volunteering commitments and I'm not sure if that will allow me enough time to focus as much as possible on my school work. Will it look bad on an application if I have no research experience whatsoever?
medisforme
I was accepted for an interview last year with absolutely no research experience whatsoever. Having said that, I am sure your naq suffers somewhat from not doing research (I received an average naq score despite tons of other cool things on my application) and I didn't end up being accepted. If you don't like research don't do it, you will be miserable. (Personally, i can't stand it and I applaud those who "enjoy" spending hours in the lab doing gram stains, protein gels, examine tissue samples and whatever else they do). future_doc
Altho not applying to UBC, I have absolutely no research experience and I never considered this as an impedient to my being a good candidate. Each of us comes with a different package. Listen to medisforme. I am entering my last year of UG and would not have the time to do research even if I had the opportunity, my schedule is at the overload point already and I had to cutback on some volunteer commitments. Your GPA is priority one and you should not do anything that may cause it to suffer.
djmackj
future_doc, it seems like you're on every single thread, haha that's cool and I appreciate the help you've been giving your peers, esp when you aren't even applying to UBC. It'd be nice if you could put this down in your OMSAS application because I'm sure your help has benefitted many people. (I wasn't sarcastic in any way if that's what it seemed =) back to the OP, these past few days I've had the chance to meet quite a few of my future colleagues during orientation, and I have met numerous people who have had very little to no research experience. With that said, they were all very active members of society and the university in general. Doing research by no way makes you a more competent doctor, and I think UBC understands that. Doing research does mean you're contributing to society, which is the characteristic that they probably are looking for.

I would try to do research next summer (such as scoring a summer job in a lab) rather than trying to do it at the same time as taking classes.
