tekken3
Hi guys, How far bak are we allowed to go for th NAQs? Is it up the beginning of university or back until we were 16?
AndreaM
Somewhere in the instructions it says to not include anything from highschool unless it showed long standing service/participation in an area. Eg. don't include playing hockey if you only did it in highschool, but if you still play, then include the highschool portion. If there is something from high school that you really want them to know about that you don't still do then you can include it in your essay. cnb88
I'm in a similar dilemma... I've been a competitive figure skater since the age of 9 and still am... so should I have it go that long on the NAQ part? It is a pretty big part of who I am (my autobio sketch consists of 80+% of stuff from figure skating!). I figured out (a conservative estimate) of the hours I've spent training since then and it amounts to 7000! Haha... it seems like a lot!

I've also been a figure skater since the age of 8. I definitely put it down since I feel as though it has significantly contributed to who I am today (work ethic, lifestyle, dealing with stress etc.). From what I can tell there aren't many who still do once they graduate from high school.
Star1234
Haha... sweet. Thanks! Are you still competing? From what I can tell there aren't many who still do once they graduate from high school. Well I was on the McGill Varsity Figure Skating Team for 2 years but then I stopped since it just because too hard to juggle a varsity sport and even attempt to stay awake during my classes. I still skate now, but just for fun. I don't compete anymore....I really just skate for myself because I enjoy it. You?
cnb88
Sweet.. that's cool that there's a varsity skating team... I wish the U of A had one! I still skate competitively (and have for my 3 previous years of university) but this year I'm going to do the Gold Triathlon side of things. I'm tired of getting my ass kicked by 14 year olds! haha. Plus I like the performing aspect of the sport, so this way I can still compete in Interpretive too Plus, that way my season isn't done at the beginning of November! More competitions I'm eligible for too by not doing Sectionals. I'm thinking I may have to stop competing once I get into med though (assuming I get in!) gnomey
Okay, I'm a figure skater too. At 41 I just skate for fun but 2 years ago I was invited to be on a competitive synchro team with 18-28 year olds. Hmm, did the season but did NOT have fun. They were the most unsupportive, backstabbing bunch of girls I have skated with. I am glad you ladies are still skating, and enjoying it, its nice to see others making it a life long sport. Haha, sounds like your typical group of figure skaters.....constantly in competition with one another, even if they're supposed to be part of a "team". That's unfortunate that you had such a crappy experience though. Luckily the McGill team was nice, mostly because we all knew that we were past our prime and were doing it now for fun. And cnb88, I quit trying at Sectionals in my second last year of high school for the same reason. I'm from a small town and so I had to make the decision of whether I wanted to move to a big city and make skating my #1 priority, or stay at home, concentrate on getting into university and have a life. I chose having a life. I did do the Gold Triathelon though and I can tell you that it was a lot of fun! I also looooved Interpretive (it was called Artistic back when I did it) and I felt like it really rewarded the most well-rounded skaters (good technique but good expression too). Oh, and apparently UBC just built a really nice new rink on campus (literally across the street from the Life Sciences Building). If I get in, I'm totally going skating between classes

When I came to the city though, the girls (most of which are half my age.... the oldest ones are 14 and I'm 21!) were (and are) absolutely awesome! It has been the best environment to skate in (minus having to come to a screeching halt when the younger skaters aren't paying attention to what's going on around them!) Have you tried another club in your area? Star1234- When I started Interpretive it was Artistic too! I agree with you that they definitly reward the most well-rounded skaters, but you can't do anything too off-the-wall either... they don't like that too much. I hope mine this year isn't too off-the-wall: I've picked music from "300" this year. I'm thinking some kinda "Warrior" theme? Haha... if we both get into UBC, then we'll both have someone to skate with in between classes! The UofA rink is pretty decent too-plus ice fees/membership fees with the UofA skating club is $30 for the year! (it's not affiliated with skate canada though... so no tests or anything like that). Which schools are you applying to?
iwh333
hi guys, i go to ubc (undergrad) and i just wanted to comment on the ice rink right across from the LSC. it's been built for a year now and it will be a venue (or practice venue) for the olympics! it's not the biggest arena but it does house 3000 seats i think. it's really nice! good luck!
