curry2spicy
Hi there! I am a high school student looking for information regarding acceptance into med school. First question: does it make a difference what course I take, as long as it is a science? Second question: what was your GPA and what was your MCAT score that got you accepted into the med program? Final question: I am planning to either take health sciences or bio-med at Western university. Which course would you say is better and why? If you believe that there is a course available for me that is even better, please let me know. I appreciate your help.
supafield
Search! There is a thread no more the 10 lines down about health studies and biomed at Western.... The program's websites also will give you more info. For Canadian medical schools you can take English for all they care.... some will have pre-reqs but you can attain those in nearly any degree. GPA/MCAT vary significantly from school to school. Each school has their own requirements and several don't even require the MCAT. Others will calculate GPA by best 2 years, most recent 2 year, weighted over 3 years, weighted over all years. So you still have a long way to go... there's tonnes of threads on this website about requirements and programs.... try searching through them and I'm sure you'll find a lot of answers. Prothrombin
To answer your first question, you can major in anything from history to engineering and get into med school. All that matters is that you take the prerequisite courses. To answer your second question. I haven't applied yet, but from what I hear, you should aim for over a 30, and around a P in the written to be competitive. To answer your last question, take a look at the courses you need to take and the requirements you need to achieve in order to get your degree. I'm in pre-med and it's pretty good but it can get tough picking courses due to the requirements for my degree. I would suggest taking the route that interests you the most, but bear in mind that if you can't handle the work load of one program you should seriously reconsider. watercolor211
ryansn, But is there a preference to science majors since it shows your interested in science?
supafield
despite the question being asked to someone else..... according to most med school's websites there is no preference towards any degree.... You'd figure it would be true if they put it out there....
watercolor211
but don't they HAVE to say that to sound fair? i guess its hard to know for sure but I never heard of people from other nonscience programs getting into med school... or is that just me

AndreaM
I think the reason why a majority of med students do science is because a) they like science that's what they thinks adcoms want to see and c) if you have to take science prereqs anyway you might as well have them count towards your degree. Do you need to take science? No.
avenir001
do psyc. it's the new premed degree apparently. it's unblvbl the number of ppl i've "met" recently who've done it and gotten in too.
Rayven
Just be very careful because the job prospects for a psych degree straight out of university are pretty minimal. Go figure.
avenir001
ohh right. psyc grads don't get to make a career out of washing lab glassware like science grads do. so unfair
Rayven
lol psych and sci. Although i'd still argue there's still more jobs for a science grad like... selling drugs.. for drug companies.
