skp1187
Hey guys, I would greatly appreciate any advice into my chances for getting an interview or even getting accepted with these stats: Alberta Resident cGPA: 3.68 best 2 years: 3.85 MCAT: 31Q (11PS/8VR/12BS) EC's include: volunteered at hospital for 5 years on the burn unit (only accumulated 250 hours though), volunteered overseas in Thailand building homes for tsunami victims, volunteer at drop in centre, worked as a porter and a OR nursing attendant, just started (40 hours) volunteering at a brain injury rehabilitation centre. I did 2 months of research last summer (didn't get anything published). I will be pursuing a masters in neuroscience this fall and will be working hard on getting some papers published (unfortunately probably wont have anything published by the application date:( ) Any comments, suggestions, or advice would be awesome! thanks
Jamer
You'll probably get an interview, and once you do, it's all that really matters. Interview day is worth 60% of the app so it'll make or break it for most applicants.
skp1187
thanks Jamer. I'm going to focus on the applications right now. Once they are sent, I'll start preparing hard for the interview. I know your stats are very competitive. Do you think its just the interview that's messing you up? And if so how are you going to prepare for it this time? thanks
Steve-0
Should definitely be possible to get an interview. At the time of application last year my overall GPA was 3.53 and best 2 were somewhere in the 3.7 range. MCAT scores were PS-10 VR-11 BS-12 WS-T. Got an interview. By interview time my GPA was 3.65 and best 2 were 3.85 (not sure if they consider that). Interview went well and I was accepted. Hope that helps. Good luck. Jamer
thanks Jamer. I'm going to focus on the applications right now. Once they are sent, I'll start preparing hard for the interview. I know your stats are very competitive. Do you think its just the interview that's messing you up? And if so how are you going to prepare for it this time? thanks Yeah, that's what the numbers say (they give you quantitative application feedback). U of C I just had some terrible stations, U of A I didn't read some of the questions. So my advice? Read the ****ing questions and answer exactly. They can't give you marks for answering something they didn't ask. I'm just going to buckle down this year and not rely on the fact I'm a naturally social person. Just practice a ton, it's not hard. polarb
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Will an 8 in VR be detrimental to the app? I have 11 in PS and BS. And an S in writing if that means anything. GPA is 3.8+ with the usual pre-med activity.
Steve-0
Congratulations Steve-O!!! Thanks for the encouragement:) Do you have any tips on how to succeed with the interview (i.e. your preparation)?? I read "Doing Right" by Hebert to get an idea about ethics as it pertains to medicine. I think it probably helped, and it was an interesting read nonetheless. It is also recommended/required we have it for our ethics course so I would have needed it anyways. Beyond that, try to do some practice scenarios (actually with somebody, with time constraints) as it is a unique position to be in and the first time you do it shouldn't be at the interview. With that said, I only got together with a friend once to practice. Its just nice to get an idea what it is like to be one-on-one with someone when you are the only one doing the talking, gives you an idea what 8 minutes actually feels like in that situation, etc. In the end, there isn't alot you can do to prepare. Relax, read the question carefully (and make sure you answer it), be yourself and everything should go fine. Good luck.
