Ikky43 Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Hey guys, I tried doing a forum search; but nothing really matched my question. So my question is: I am interested in joining the Varsity Track Team. However, practices are 4-5 days a week. Now this is going to be hell for my schedule. Along with the 10 hour commuting time per week, 4-5 practices a week, cooking my own food and studying, I will have no time for absolutely anything else. So the main point of my question is: If I do join, and do well on the track team, will this make up for lack of research, volunteering etc during the school year? I will also have to dedicate a large portion of the summer training which means less time for other activities. P.S. I just remembered that I volunteer at the Grace every Sunday. So I will have to be like a machine if I want all of this to workout lol. But I am definitely willing to go through that if the E.C. is worth it (plus I LOVE track and field). P.S.S. Anyone have any idea about whether or not U of T gives out sports scholarships? Thanks for reading, I hope no one finds this "TL; DR" lol.

I think too many people worry about building the perfect package. Just be yourself, make time to explore/shadow a doctor to see if it's what you want, and you're set. A little summer research gig doesn't hurt either.
shannn Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 LOL, next. I've seen the Varsity Meet times. They're not that impressive. Try out, it won't hurt You just have to consider the sacrafice you've said you'd have to make. All those experiences (research, other volunteer work, etc...) in exchange for varsity experience (which in itself is pretty cool, you travel, make great friends).

Hope you survive your stint. Alright on a more serious note being on the varsity team can sap up A LOT of time. I know a few dudes on the varsity football team, and all they do is practice, train, eat, and attend a few lectures. And lets not underestimate recover time. If you just finished practice, you can't just go home and hit the books straight (or at least I can't, which is why I'm not on any league during the school year). I think its possible, but I assume track & field runs in the summer so you can't do NSERC during that period. But you could pick up an NSERC/work-study/supervised-study in the winter. And keep your sunday volunteering gig, its not THAT time consuming is it? And for athletic scholarships, talk to financial aid. They will give you a straight answer. I'm sure I've heard of a few from my varsity friends.
