60% courses of your current year?

Hello...I just noticed U of T's med school requirement that 60% of your courses must be of the year you're in. I just started 3rd year, meaning I need 6/10 courses to be 3rd year courses.

Well this is really confusing/worrying... I'm at McMaster and my program has mostly required courses with only a few electives. The required courses have only 2-3 third year courses, while the rest are 2nd year. This is the curricula for the program, not my own choosing.

A couple of the required courses are longggg lab courses...which makes them conflict with many other courses. So it's hard to pick 3rd year electives in available time slots...even though I only have room for a couple electives.

I went to an adviser and they told me to email U of T. I will do that tonight. Just wondering from everyone's experience? Am I screwed or what is this? I'm going to have to drop some electives and try to get 3rd year courses then...but I don't even know if I can since most seats are taken.

Last question...is Univ. of Toronto only one with this requirement in Canada? Are most schools in US ok with it?

I'm not sure about your situation with Mac, but I can tell you that Western also requires that you take 60% courses at your year level.

If I apply next year...4th year...and take 60% 4th year courses would that be ok? Or would I have needed to take 60% 3rd year courses too?

At both UofT and Western, students in their 4th year should take 60% of their courses as a combination of 3rd & 4th year level. So, if you can't take 60% 4th year level because you school doesn't offer many classes, then you can take 3rd year classes instead.

Make sure you email the schools you're interested in. You should be okay because you are following your program. Their main point is making sure you don't pad your senior years with a lot of 100 level courses to boost your gpa.
