AcXX Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 I'm applying to both med school(ottawa only cause I didnt take mcat), as well as grad school, so I was thinking of asking a professor I had two seminar type courses with and got good marks in, for a reference for both schools. He doesn't really know me personally and the only way I think I stand out is in one of the classes I was one of the few people that would answer questions he asked, and I usually got them right. So how should I go about emailing him and asking for a reference?
future_doc Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 You want to remind him who you are, tell him you love his courses and tell him you need his help b/c you are a crossroads requiring an academic reference. Send him your transcript, updated CV and a motivation letter so he has a sense of who you are. The motivational letter cpould have been the Essay for U/T, b ut you are not applying there. A no name LOR is next to worthless so you want him invested in your future progress. Also, let him know you can either phone him or meet him as he would prefer if he gives you his contact address/phone no. and sets a tentative date. Let him know that due to the competitive naturee of med school and the lottery aspect, you are also aplying to grad school in something that interests you as a backup - so he has it all in context. Finally, you need to inform him of the deadline by which he would need to mail the CAF & LOR and if there is a Confidential Assessment Form, send it as attachment (give his details in OMSAS CAF so it can be printed out). And thank him for his consideration. Ask him he coulod kindly confirm safe receipt and that he is willing to be your referee. If he does not answer you in a timely manner, chase him gently but firmly for a reply.
