hkmedic
So, how long is your personal statement? I'm at about 950ish words. Do you guys go right up to 990-1000? I'm wondering if I should add something somewhere, but then I would/might have to elaborate on it.

They count each word and if you are not at 1000 exactly, not only do you get rejected, they send out hitmen to banish you from the Earth. You're def in a pickle. I currently have about 980 words. I guess I should look out for the hitmen...
hkmedic
Yo chill, it's not a joke nor is it serious. I was just wondering do people actually try to reach close to 1000 or are there people out there with 500, 700 , etc. I was just wondering about the lengths... nothing much. And YES, I KNOW it's always QUALITY over QUANTITY. BUT I WAS JUST CURIOUS about #s. Just how people are curious about MCAT #s, GPAs...
Cnussey
994 words (seriously) and 5,921 characters--including spaces. Just write what you need. Don't worry about other people.

I'm no expert but i dont think you need to worry a bit.....not even the tiniest bit if your at 950.....hence my original reply
future_doc
Most people seem to have the opposite problem and need to cut it down. It is quality not quantity and if you do it in 750 words that is fine too. But, just be careful of the hitmen, they are on the prowl.
Panda eyes
Yes future_doc is absolutely right! My essay started off long and rambling for about 5 pages....then I reduced it 2 pages but it was still about 1600 words. I think reorganizing my thoughts actually took waaay more time then actually thinking of something to write. I'm glad to hear that you managed to complete your essay though. I wish I was in your situation earlier... I don't think that an extra 50 words will matter much. Or you can make sure that each of your statements are well supported. thereisnotry
Mine started out around 1800 words . I cut it down to exactly 1000. 6571 characters with spaces. 950 is perfectly acceptable, if as many other posters have already mentioned, they're 950 words of quality. Illuminis
I cut mine down from 1200 words to 850, while containing the exact same amount of content. It's better to be succinct than ramble on, as long as you get your point across.
zzban
I realized that my essay is a bit over 1000-word (1037), which was under 8000-character limit. Do you know if we have to adhere to the 8000-character limit or the actual word limit? Or does that character limit set more flexible considering verifier numbers to be input? FYI: I found out about 8000-character limit experimentally using the "character count" section of the application page

FYI: I found out about 8000-character limit experimentally using the "character count" section of the application page You got to try to stick more or less around 1000 words. The 8000 character limit is simply because some words are longer than others. I'm not sure if "37" extra words will be penalized, but is it possible to cut it down? Oh man, mine was a real struggle. It was initially 1,700! But after getting people who know how to trim the excess, it was probably 1,100. Then it was just a matter of finalizing it. I think mine is around 1,040 now. Can't wait to submit this!

Just remember that if you're struggling to cut words, I'd aim to be closer to 1,000 words than 1,100. This doesn't sound like it'll be a problem for you, but give yourself an ultimatum of <1,050 if it does becomes one! Oh, and get another set of eyes to read your essay. I was shocked at how much useless I crap I had in mine, but it took a few pairs of eyes, other than my own, to see this!

I'll see who else i can bug i wont go 1 word over the limit. Learned a very hard lesson back in undergrad about going over word limits.

But I also wouldn't run my mouth with backing it up. That info comes straight from admissions! (the issue that arises if it approaches 1,100) But clearly, if attaining =<1,000 is possible for you, go for it! In addition to passing it around for ppl to read, I also found it helpful to put it down for a while (hrs, days) and then come back to it.

YEah admissions told me the same thing so you're right....for me its just habit now but u you are correct. days......hahaha i'll put it down for a few hrs. Actually i've worked on it bit by bit for 9 days now. So everything is shored up pretty well except the conclustion which im doing now. I'll give it a once over tomorrow for sure. cheers and gluck
