Should I apply to Mcmaster?

Recommended Posts

I disagree, to an extent. I think that people with a 10VR will be competitive, but I don't think that it will help those with low GPAs.

Sorry, mis-worded that. 10VR will definitely be competitive if you have a solid GPA. I agree with you, it won't make up for a poor cGPA.

i wonder if a good GPA will make up for a crappy verbal? like what was said above, 3.85 with an 8 in VR.

There's never any harm in trying - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

If all else fails, perhaps you could redo your MCAT and try for a higher score on VR seeing as though you already have a solid GPA.

well, we won't know about that now that GPa weighting has been cut in half. I feel inclined to say that a 4.00 with an 8 is probably less competative than a 3.85 with a 10 but we don't know until after. I think in the end, it comes down to how well written the ABS is.

you gotto apply to really get your answer - applies to most of these questions

with that said, you have to consider the average gpa of all those that apply and consider the average VR of all applicants. Then see how much further you are away from the average in both categories to gain an understanding of your chances on these components (remember theres an abs).

of course you dont know the averages of applicants, jsut matriculants.

if i had to say, id take a high vr score over a high gpa, just cause i think they are more rare. In either case, if you are good to go in one of these, plus have a strong abs, your doing well

Been there, done that. Didn't help. I just can't bring myself to go through that again. Sigh.

If you want to figure out whether your VR is competitive or not, look at what percentile you are. Mac accepts 1 out of 10 students, right? So, you need to be have a score in the 90th percentile to be in the ballpark of the lowest-ranked students in the class. I am not sure if I remember the VR breakdowns, but I'm pretty sure my 11 VR ranged from 85-94 percentile. Which means it would be slightly below the accepted. 10 VR is sub-85th percentile, so you would probably need a very good GPA and ABS to make up for it.

Hmm, I think your suggested method makes sense if you want to weigh up your chances. Only thing I would add, is that Mac accepts fewer than 10% of applicants though. They get something like 4,500 applicants for under 200 openings: give or take, you are looking at between 4% and 5% acceptance rate. Scary stuff

I wrote the MCAT a couple of years ago and made a 13 on verbal...I rewrote it in Sept. and haven't received my scores back yet. Can I release my 13 verbal score and use that, or should I wait to release my latest score?

It does specify "most recent test date", which I guess answers my question, haha....but my most recent test scores won't be out by Oct. 1st anyway...any ideas on what I should do?
