Cnussey
Depends--do you make a habit of it? Do you learn from it? Is it a hobby? Or are you just another typical tourist lying on a beach in Cuba?
future_doc
Can I put this on my sketch? Sure, presumably it has broadened your horizons and exposed you to other cultures and customs, and this can only be good.
hkmedic
Sure, presumably it has broadened your horizons and exposed you to other cultures and customs, and this can only be good. I agree with future_doc on this too. I have lots of friends who've never even stepped outside our dinky little town here... In my opinion, they've missed out on a lot. Even traveling to different cities in Canada can broaden one's horizons.
drdev
I know for the police force, i have heard of them turning people away and telling them to travel and experience more in life first. Experiencing new cultures and different places makes you more well rounded and is always a plus. Not that i have it on my resume but i do belive it makes you a better person. benhc911
Well, I put my travel that related to volunteer work on my sketch, a one month stint in South Africa, and the IAS conference in Mexico City... but I have been debating including a few sailing trips through the BVI, and other Caribbean islands.. I only have 39 things on my sketch so it isn't like I don't have the room, I just don't want it to seem like I am padding it out. Thoughts? T. Funke
I would include the sailing trips. First, that is awesome. Second, who knows what questions might come up in an interview where you could expand on situations you've encountered sailing.

This made me lol because all I've ever done while sailing is lie on the deck in a bathing-suit and watch the "boys" take care of all the work. benhc911
but if I consider putting my sailing trips, should I include the competitive sailing I take part in? I usually race about once a week, it takes 1-2 hours, during the summer... and I have won numerous races... but it is pretty informal, only 5-20 boats per race. Absolutely, that is two separate entries. There is pleasure sailing and competitve sailing, you do both, each bring overlapping but different attributes to the table. And winning constitutes an entry or entries under Awards, informal or not.

LMAO I guess it is obvious that I've never sailed. I was picturing small boat, tumultuous weather, and the sailor keeping calm getting out of sticky situations....hence my interview question remark:p
benhc911
well for me... the boats have never been all that small... but I have been caught mid storm, been injured and had some major sail damage >_> But I really don't see how to work it into my sketch... and to be honest... I would much rather have them ask me about my volunteer work in Africa than my sailing hobby >_<

benhc911
If I was to include it... I guess I would have to put it under other? or should I put it under extra curricular? On another note, is it weird to put my first aid/cpr training under formal education on the sketch? Thanks
thatonekid
extra curricular vs other is up to you. The advantage of putting it under extra curricular is that you get the 150 characters to discuss it (i.e. that you won some races, etc.) As for first aid/cpr, I know many people who are putting it in their formal education. TwistedFlames
Probably a dumb question, but if I was trained in April 2009 and my card says the certification expires April 2012... can I enter the from-to dates as April 2009-2012 in formal education... or will that seem like I re-certified each year?
