WS cut?

So basically the concensus is that I have to plan to rewrite because of WS?

And potentially your VR as well. Based on last year's cut-offs, a 9 might not get you an interview at Western or Queens. I think your score is fine for UofT though, which uses the MCAT as a "flag"

Good luck!

So basically the WS is going to make it that I have to rewrite yet again to make it for Queen's unless by a miracle they lower the WS cutoff this year to that of 2005's?

And Western.

This miracle won't happen, most people expect them to go up rather than down.

No one knows what they're thinking in that office.

I would guess a Q again..... but maybe someone has a new idea and they will only take people with M's because that's the first letter in medicine lol.

if you think you have a shot just apply. I swear we need a sticky with just those 9 words!!

Who expects the WS to go up? I was under the impression the R was an aberration.

Yeah WS=R was a ridiculous cut-off. I mean that's in like the 85-95th percentile or something close to that.

There is no way that could be raised above R, there probably wouldn't be a large enough pool if the WS cutoff was exceeding the 95th percentile!

I think that the problem with the WS scores is that they're not scaled. Whereas all the other parts of the MCAT are scaled scores, ensuring the the top X percentile will make the cut-offs, the writing samples are assigned scores based on their own merits. This is because people grade them individually. What I'm trying to say is, the WS will be given a score that it deserves, not based on how it compares to all the other students' WS.

This means that in any given year, it is possible to have a large pool of applicants with excellent WS scores, thus making the need for a higher cut-off. I pray that this won't happen this year.

Very true.

Although I do remember reading the 2008 MCAT stats and it suggested that a WS=Q was equal to the 75th percentile.

Approximately 15% of all test takers score WS=R or better, whereas if you include WS=Q then that percentage jumps to >33%.

When it's put that way, WS=R doesn't seem like that strict a cut-off. I mean less than 33% of test takers score VR>=10, yet VR=10 is a cut-off at UWO.

Ya, but how many of those people have an R for the WS AND VR=10? I'd bet not that many.

Yeah good point. It tailors the applicant pool significantly. Although I'd think there would be some correlation between an applicant's WS and VR scores.

...Oh wait, the MCAT means nothing!

Sorry, I should explain.

If anything, one would expect an increase than a decrease.

I concur that it will be a Q this year, simply bc I'm aplying.

I think you got your first sentence reversed! You expect a decrease, rather than an increase, correct?

Since it appeared to be a WS=Q cut-off last cycle, it's fair to think that it may remain the same, but I wouldn't rule out WS=R.
