Verifiers for scholarships

Recommended Posts

I'm working on finishing my OMSAS application....

I'm from Alberta and I'm wondering a couple things...

For the scholarships I've won, how does that work if they are given by the government (ie Alexander Rutherford and the Jason Lang Memorial Scholarship)? They don't show up on any transcripts. Do I need verifiers for them? And if I do, for the Alexander Rutherford one, would I use "Premier Ed Stelmach" or like a high school teacher? And the Jason Lang one for univeristy grades... again.. "Premier Ed Stelmach" or a random friend that also got it?

I realize this has probably already been answered, but honestly, I can find it in recent history, and considering the amount I still have to do for this application, I'd rather not spend a ton of time looking through this forum in hopes it was already asked. (I know I know... I shouldn't procrastinate like this, but I really hate having to type in the activity section for each school in Canada.... it takes awhile and is really tedious. haha)

The Awards Section provides for a Verifier. Presumably, the govt section dealing with Scholarships has a Registrar or Secretary who maintains Records, and this person would have an office and contact no. When you apply, you need to have an initial contact for acceptance and processing. So, start there to enquire for the contact name, address, phone no. to give. The easy way would be a credible person from high school woho would know in their official capacity, secreretary, principal, teacher, guidance counsellor.

Re Jason Lang one, wouldn't the university registrar have a record? (if iti not on the Transcript). If it involves money given to the university for you account, then there is a record somewhere, [perhaps accounting if they paid part of your tuition. You just need a credible third party (other than a friend with whom you sharedd this happy news).

I'm in the same boat with the Jason Lang. I still have my original letter saying I received the scholarship. I showed it to a friend and was going to have them verify. It is definitely a better idea to call the registrars office and track down a verifier, but there is only five days left until the applications are due...and I work during business hours, so I may give it a try, but worst case scenario, I'm going with the friend/documentation available for a verifier.

Thanks future_doc! That's what I kinda figured for the Alexander Rutherford one for high school. I could just use a teacher and it'd be all good.

The Jason Lang one is a little more difficult though... I don't actually know if the university actually has a record of the people who have won the Jason Lang. Basically they just forward the marks on to the province and the province does it from there. We get a check mailed out sometime in December, so it doesn't even really get applied to tuition directly. I think I might talk to the Office of the Registrar at the university on Monday... maybe they'll either a) have record of it or B) be able to let me know the best person to put as a verifier for it.
