Are Caribbean Medical Schools an option for canadian students?

Recommended Posts

Many foreign medical schools have developed programs exclusively to accommodate the throngs of hopeful doctors that have been rejected by traditional American medical education.

Many of these foreign medical schools are in the Caribbean. The medical programs are often conducted completely in English and use the same textbooks that are used in traditional American medical schools. What’s more, these schools frequently hire professors from the same American medical schools.

A number of these foreign medical schools even offer programs that start students off straight out of high school.

What is your opinion?

Not on point, but University of West Indies produces excellent physicians to serve the Caribbean population with 3 campuses, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. These medical schools select high caliber candidates only from within the community and they normally start med school at about age 18, following 2 years of study (after high school) after writing the CAPE Exams (similar to A Levels in UK). I know of one girl from the Caribbean presently completing Gr. 12 in Ontario and she will likely be accepted into med school in the Caribbean, age 18, directly from high school. Her o ther option is to study for her Bachelor's in Canada and then apply to Canadian med schools (she is Canadian), but as she intends to practice in the Caribbean, she prefers the shorter route. And Quebec accepts many students into med school after completing high school (Gr.11) and 2 years of Cegep.
